I heard Arena’s approach and glanced back at her.

“Here,” she said, handing me a clean pair of shorts.

I took them, keeping one hand in front of me.

“Lettie, he’s fine. You need to control your breathing, or you’re going to pass out,” Arena said, moving around me to bring the frightened woman inside. “Nav, would you mind stepping out for a few minutes so I can calm her down?”

I grunted and skirted around the tall female. Her slow smile and knowing, sharp gaze made me uncomfortable when it dipped to my hand.

“See you soon, Nav,” she said, closing the door.

I stepped into the shorts and glanced at the window, seeing Arena in a clean T-shirt, guiding the frightened one to the couch.

“What are you guys doing here?” Arena asked. “And how did you find us? Aren’t there infected all over town?”

“No, it’s like a ghost town out there. Not an infected, whole or dismembered, in sight between here and the docks.”

Belak had worked quickly to clear the way, but I knew he hadn’t gotten them all. He’d left the main group by the supplies so they’d be guarded. I would need to warn them to stay away from that side of town. Actually, it would be better if they waited for us at the docks instead of—

“We saw the arrows when we got to the road.”

“Arrows?”

I frowned, remembering that I’d removed them.

“Yeah, they looked fresh. We thought you left them.”

Belak must have remade the marks. Dangerous to do with the humans who tried to take Arena still close by. But I understood why. He wanted these females to be able to find me if they needed me.

“I didn’t leave them,” Arena said.

“Oh, well then I guess we risked our lives for nothing. We thought you were ready to leave or something.”

I scowled at the woman through the window until I heard a distant gunshot.

Frowning, I faced north, trying to determine if it was from the super store, or…

Another shot rang out.

It had come from the direction of the docks.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

ARENA

Lettie was shaking and still breathing too quickly as I listened to Gwen’s explanation.

“I think you might need to take one of your—”

The door banged open, interrupting me.

Lettie screamed.

I looked at Nav in surprise.

“Did you leave anyone with your boat?” he demanded.

Gwen glanced at me.
