“Most of the guys have had the opportunity to pass Marjorie’s soup coolers around like she’s a buy-one, get-one-free dealer, so I need an unbiased opinion.” He shrugs like we’re talking about the rain chances for today’s forecast.
I pick up my phone and send a text to the group chat between my sisters and me.
Sibling Chat
Me:
Why is KK in my office with questions on his dick’s potential suitors?
Sarai:
Lord, who forgot to switch out the little blue pills and replaced them with M&M’s?
Serenity:
Chile, I keep telling Dr. Dorn to stop prescribing them, but he politely told me that if Daddy’s shriveled dick wants to keep pushing who was he to stop the motion. So my hands are tied.
The back-to-back replies from my sisters cause me to chuckle loudly. The three of us have some thoughts about Pops’ need to get his dick wet. I understand a man has needs, but why the hell do I have to know about them firsthand? I know he has friends, so why aren’t they hearing about this mess? It's beyond me.
“I know I raised you not to be rude. Who are you keekeeing with like my dick isn’t waiting for proper counsel?”
A heavy sigh falls from my lips as I look from my phone to Pops like he’s got three heads. This can’t be the same man who raised a lawyer, a doctor, and a school principal. This can’t be the man who taught those same children to be productive members of society. There’s no way I’m convinced that Kairo Kensington is the same man who taught me how to play basketball and baseball because we needed a way to bond.
“Uh, I think you might have my job functions confused, Pops. I’m a criminal defense attorney. I don’t provide counsel for dick issues.”
“You’s a Black-ass lie. I paid good money for you to get that little degree. Now, I need advice, and you’re the one qualified person to give it to me.”
For countless seconds, I simply stare wordlessly at Pops because I’m hoping he’ll either get mad enough to leave or that the last few minutes of my life will become a factory reset. I often wish I could hit Control+Alt+Delete when people say stupid stuff. My phone chimes again, and it gratefully gives me a reason to break the stare-down between Pops and me.
Sibling Chat
Serenity:
You went silent. Is Daddy still there being a menace?
Sarai:
Now, I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord, Daddy’s dick he keeps.
Me:
Oh my God, you’re going to hell, Rai.
And yeah, he’s still here, Ren. Save me.
Sarai:
Serenity:
Praying for you, big brother. I gotta check on a patient. Y’all be good. Rai, I’ll see you tonight.
I exit out of the thread between my sisters and me as my focus returns to Pops, who is still looking like a bump on a log. I sigh again and decide that sometimes it’s better to pet the bear rather than taunt it.
“How does Marjorie look? Does she have more going for her than her soup coolers?”
A wide cheshire grin slides into place as Pops comes closer and takes a seat in one of the two chairs in front of my desk.
Lord, have mercy.
