“They’re at the Met? I thought he was taking them to see the Mets.”

“I don’t think so? Let me text him.” Anya fired off a quick message to Walt, who responded instantly, as always. Anya laughed when she got the message. “We’re both wrong. He took them to a children’s concert at the Met, the Lincoln Center Met.”

“Opera!” Gabe grinned. “A dark horse contender.”

Anya’s phone pinged with another text. “He says he’s taking them to Zabar’s after. He thinks they’re old enough to learn the proper things to order at a smoked fish counter.”

“So then we do have time.” Gabe got onto the bed, shut Anya’s laptop, and immediately started kissing her.

“I need to write that speech,” she protested weakly.

“Do it later,” he muttered in her ear. “This is more important.”

“Than proposing that the library expand its citizenship prep classes for people outside Brooklyn?”

“Than anything in the history of the universe,” he joked.

“When you’re right, you’re right.” She took off her reading glasses and set them on top of her laptop, which is when she noticed he’d brought in his laptop too. “Wait, why did you come in here?”

Gabe gave her a sheepish smile. “I’ve been working on something. I wanted to show you.”

“What is it?”

“Nothing that can’t wait until after I take your pants off.”

“No, now I’m curious,” she insisted. “Let me see.”

“You’re so bossy.” He kissed her, and she nipped at his lower lip.

“I am your boss, so.”

“Fuck, I love it when you say that,” he breathed. “Fine! I’ll show you.”

He grabbed his laptop and opened it. It was so sweet, how eager he looked as he handed it to her.

“A campaign plan?” Anya was confused. “For who?”

“For you,” he said. “I mapped out a ten-point strategy to get you from library board to the U.S. Senate in the next twelve years.”

Anya burst out laughing. “You want us to move to DC?”

“No, that’s the beauty part!” Gabe pointed to the laptop screen. “You’ll be elected as the outgoing mayor of New York City, so we wouldn’t have to move until both girls are in college. Plus I think it’s likely Senator Beihl will retire that cycle, so the timing is perfect.”

“Wow, you’ve really thought this through.” Anya felt overwhelmed with affection. “Do you think maybe we should win this race before we plot my ascendancy?”

“Please. Simone and Kira are going to set us up on the predictive dialer, we’re gonna blow through our voter contact goal in like a week,” Gabe scoffed. “Besides, it’s never too early to plot your ascendancy.”

“And what if I don’t need all that?” Anya ran her fingers through his hair. “What if I already have everything I’ve ever wanted?”

“I’d still want to give you more.” He looked at her seriously, but then he cracked a smile. “Plus, it’d be hot to call you Senator.”

Anya laughed. “You can do that now. Save ourselves a lot of time and effort.”

“Great point, Senator.” He started kissing her neck and moving his hands down her body. “I hope you liked my ten-point plan, Senator.”

“I love you so much,” Anya murmured. “Even if you’re still way too focused on winning.”

“Nah.” He grinned and kissed her again. “I just really like working for candidates I believe in.”
