Then I remember I didn’t tell Ezra my exciting news.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you.” He looks over at me so we are face to face, giving me his undivided
attention. “I think I know what I want to do after graduation. I know I’m cutting it close since
graduation is literally next weekend, but whatever.”
“What is it?”
“Drumroll, please.” He humors me and makes a drumroll sound with his mouth. “I’m going to be
an event coordinator,” I tell him with the biggest smile. I can’t even hide my excitement about my
decision.
“Really? I think that’s a great idea.” I’m filled with pride hearing him tell me it’s a great idea. I
thought everyone would be skeptical, but my parents and Ezra both think it's a good thing. It feels
weird having so much support for a decision that I made myself.
“Thanks. Yeah, when I was talking to your parents’ coordinator at the party, she gave me her
number, so I called her on the way here. I think I accidentally woke her up but whatever. And she
offered me an internship with her company.” She was really excited to hear from me and talked to me
for a good amount of time on my drive down here. My internship will be unpaid for six months, which
means I’ll have to have another part-time job, but that’s ok.
She went over what will be expected of me, and I’m actually excited. I never thought I would be
excited to have a job, but I am.
“I hope I’m good at it,” I say, honestly.
“Red, you’ll be great. I know you can do anything you put your mind to.” I lean in and press a kiss
to his lips.
“I’ll have to live in Savannah, though. Is that going to be ok?” I hadn’t thought about the long-
distance part until just now. I know it’s not forever, but it’s going to suck being even further away
from Ezra. He still has a few years left in medical school, so I know him moving back to Savannah
isn’t an option right now.
“We’ll be fine. We’ve been long-distance best friends for so long, I’m pretty sure we can do
anything.” I nod, smiling at him. “We’ll just get great at phone sex. Thank God for video calls.” I
laugh into his arm, remembering our last video call. It’s obviously not the same as actually being with
him, but it will be a good substitute when we have to go a while without seeing each other.
“Hey, are you coming to graduation?” We haven’t talked about it, but I know he knows when it is.
