“Really?” I was surprised because he handled the money on fight night.
“Dad was a gambler. I vowed I’d never be the same. Instead, I handle the betting on fight night.”
“Huh, okay.” I turned to Blue.
“Had blue hair as a Prospect,” he admitted sheepishly, running a hand over his hair, which is now white-blond.
“Looked fucking awful.” Lawless smirked.
Blue flipped him the bird. “Swivel, VP.”
I raised an eyebrow at River, who was sitting next to him.
He shrugged. “Parents were hippies. My legal name is River.”
I nodded and looked at Mystery.
“I arrived the same day as Midnight. Did what he did, but it took everyone longer to realise, by which time I’d found a spare cut. Shoes asked Harris who I was, and Harris said it was a mystery. Hence the name.” He smirked. “I’m good at blending in.”
“I can see that.” I studied him.
Mystery was average in all ways. Brown hair, brown eyes, clean-shaven, medium height and build. Easy to overlook. But his eyes gleamed with intelligence.
“Not always a bad thing, though,” I added.
All of these men were Officers in the club. This core group seemed to be the closest brothers.
Steel, their Chaplain, sighed and pulled a huge knife from behind his back. “My name came from this.” He held it up so the steel blade shimmered in the firelight.
My heart beat faster. “That’s so pretty,” I breathed. I reached out to touch, then curled my fingers before I made contact.
“Fuck me,” Glacier groaned, hanging his head. “Now you’ve done it, Steel.”
Confused, I looked up at him. “Done what?”
“Steel makes blades and sells them for thousands.” Glacier speared Steel with a long-suffering look. “I’m gonna be spending a ton of money with you now that Juju knows.”
I suddenly clicked who Steel was.
“No way.” I looked closely at Steel. “You’re Lazarus Barnet? Holy shit. I’ve got three of your knives.”
Steel smirked. “I know. Saw the blade you held on Barb. Come by my workshop and I’ll make you a custom one.”
My eyes widened. “Seriously?”
Steel’s teeth flashed white as he grinned. “Yeah, Juju. I’m serious. Consider it your welcome-to-the-family gift from me.”
I was stunned and grateful. “Thank you, Steel. I won’t say no because your knives are the bomb.”
He raised his beer bottle at me, then took a long slug.
Only two brothers remained—Zero and Rags.
“Ours are pretty simple,” Zero, their tech guy, said. “Zero because I do all the tech, and Rags, our medic, always has a rag in his pocket.”
Rags pulled a cloth out of his pocket and waved it at me. “Never know when you’ll need something to stop the bleeding.”
“Huh, okay, that makes sense. Thanks for telling me. It's interesting. I figured out Glacier’s pretty quickly, and Lurch because he’s so tall.” I looked at Lawless. “I’m guessing yours is because you don’t give a shit about getting into trouble.”
