“On it,” Wes said, typing away at his keyboard.
“As for the rest of the plan, it remains. Pretty Boy will be monitoring everything, and Piper will be inside if shit goes south. But if nothing changes, we keep to the plan to extract Luca in two days when Victor will be there. We need to make sure we take him out.”
My heart stalled out again.
“You’re going to kill Victor?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Knox turned to look at me. “We have to, Lucia. If we don’t, he’ll never stop hunting you. I know his type. He’s a dangerous man who will go to great lengths for revenge. To keep you and Luca safe, the best plan is to eliminate the threat.”
“Oh,” I breathed. It shouldn’t have surprised me. Knox was right, after all. But the thought of Victor lying dead in a pool of his own blood still caused my stomach to turn. There was a time when I’d loved him. A time when I’d thought he was my knight in shining armor. Sure, he’d turned out to be the villain in my fairytale, but it still didn’t ease the thought of knowing my son’s father would no longer be alive very soon.
“Are you okay with that?” Marcus asked. “If you’re going to have an issue with us eliminating him, I need to know now.”
I sucked my lip between my teeth for a moment, then gave one quick nod. “I don’t have a problem with it. You’re all right. Victor will never stop hunting us, and I have to protect Luca. No matter what. He’s all that matters.”
“Smart girl,” Piper said. “And a good mother. Luca is a lucky kid.”
It surprised me to hear I was a good mother considering I was helping to plot my ex-husband’s murder, but he wasn’t just some deadbeat dad. He was a dangerous monster who would kill my son before he let me have him back.
“Then it’s settled,” Marcus said.
The three of them all nodded in agreement.
“I’ll hit you back shortly with who you need to approach for a job,” Wes said to Piper.
He disappeared from the screen, and I exhaled a stilling breath.
“Let’s move then,” Marcus said, pushing up off the couch.
Piper rose with him, but first, she reached over and touched my shoulder. “I’ll get in that complex with him, and I swear to you, I’ll guard him with my life.”
A lump formed in my throat as I reached up and placed my hand over hers. It was such a gentle touch from a woman I’d been told could slaughter anyone in her path. And from the look in her eye and the tone in her voice, I believed it. And I was grateful she would be watching over my son.
They walked out of the room, leaving Knox and me alone on the couch. He wrapped me up in those arms I desperately needed, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
“We won’t fail, Lucia. I promise.”
I squeezed him back, so grateful this warrior had come into my life. And I knew he was right. Now that I’d met the team, all my uncertainties faded away.
I was getting my son back.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Lucia
––––––––
I sat in the villa living room surrounded by heavy weapons. My eyes bulged as I watched Marcus and Knox handle them with such ease.
“Good to go,” Knox said, slamming the magazine into the gun.
“Good to go,” Marcus echoed as he approved his weapon too.
One by one, the two of them went through every piece of equipment, checking it over to make sure it was operating correctly for their mission.
“You done good, Pretty Boy,” Knox said into the screen opened on the coffee table. “Send him the rest of the dough.”
A white van arrived this morning with the bags of weapons they planned on using to rescue Luca. Since none of them could carry weapons on the plane to get here, it had been up to Wes to strike a deal with a local arms dealer. And it seemed he’d more than delivered.
