“Shit,” I murmured. “This isn’t good. Piper, you got eyes on Luca?”
More gunshots rang through the night, return fire no doubt.
“I’m going in now,” she responded. “I’m gonna have to take out the guards outside my room to get to him, but I don’t have a choice.”
“I’m sixty seconds out, Piper,” Marcus said.
“I’ll meet you in Luca’s room,” she answered. “We won’t have time to put him on with Lucia.”
“Just get to the boy,” I said. “Get him the hell out of here.”
“Vitali’s men are in!” Wes said, and I heard the panicked tenor of his voice. “Dude, it’s brutal out there! You need to get the hell outta there.”
“Not without Luca,” I ground out. “Should I join you two and get him?”
“No,” Marcus said. “You’re too far. Stick to the plan. Take out Victor. We’ve got Luca.”
“Roger that,” I said, and Piper echoed it.
“Moving now,” Piper said.
I heard a door swing open and glanced around the corner to see Victor rushing out.
Fuck!
He leaped over the bodies on the floor and bolted down the hall. I flew out onto my stomach and took aim, pissed I’d have to drop him without looking into his eyes while the life left him. But shit had gone sideways, and we had to adapt.
I pressed my finger on the trigger to shoot, but more gunshots rang out. Victor dropped to the ground, ducking around a corner.
Son of a bitch.
I jumped up and moved after him, my sights searching for him as I prepared to take the shot. One foot over the other, I slunk down the hall, my muscles all twitching at the ready.
“Victor! It’s the Vitalis! We need to get you out of here!” a voice called.
Running footsteps. More men.
Shit. This wasn’t going as planned, but I still had to eliminate the threat to Lucia and her son. I couldn’t let Victor get away.
I switched guns, holstering my pistol and slipping my M4 Carbine assault rifle off my shoulder. Lifting it up and preparing to unleash hell on Victor and his friends, I pushed toward the sound of their voices.
“We need to go, Victor! We’re overrun!” someone said.
“How did they get in?” a man, likely Victor, growled.
“They blew up the fucking gate, man.””
“What the fuck?” Victor responded. “Why the hell are they here?”
I smirked. The dickhead still didn’t know they thought he’d killed Franco.
“We need to go, Victor. We’ll get you to the armored van out back. I think we can get out of here.”
To hell you are.
I burst into the room, sending bullets flying. My vision absorbed everything in the blink of an eye, just like I’d been trained. Six guys. Victor at the far end.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
