“You ready to hack me in?” I asked as I got there and looked at the keypad.
“I sure fucking hope I do this right,” Knox grumbled.
I walked him through the process, and I heard him clicking away on the keyboard. Suddenly, the red light on the keypad turned green.
“Nice work, Beefcake. I’m in.”
“Remember, I don’t have eyes in that room, Pretty Boy, so be prepared.”
“Roger that,” I answered. I slid the silenced pistol from the hidden pocket in my coat and flipped off the safety. Slowly, I pushed open the door. Using my pistol to lead the way, I entered the room. A huge grin spread across my face when I saw the computer server in the center of the room.
“This is it,” I said into my comms. “And it’s empty. I just need ten minutes, and we can get the hell out of here.”
“I’ll be watching the hall cameras. I’ll let you know if anyone is coming your way.”
I hurried over to the computers and sat down at the chair. After inserting the drive into the USB port, I started clicking away while I broke through their security. Once inside, I searched the folders until I found the one I was looking for.
“Got you, motherfuckers,” I whispered as I dragged the file onto my USB drive.
“What did you find?” Knox asked.
“Looks like they are trying to get the locations of the Russian nukes and the codes so they can take control of them and nuke Eastern Russia.”
“Jesus Christ,” Knox breathed. “They want to use them?”
“Looks that way from what I’m reading here. Christ. It’s a damn good thing we are doing this. That would be a lot of human life lost if they succeeded.”
“Countless lives,” Knox said. “What the fuck? Who does that?”
“Petro and his friends, apparently. Save the children, my ass. This plan would kill tens of thousands of kids. Probably more.”
“Then get that shit so we can stop them, Pretty Boy. It’s riding on you.”
I watched the percentage growing on the file save. It inched by so slowly. “I will. I’m not going to fuck this up.”
“You okay?” Piper asked, finally returning to our comms.
“Yeah. I’m good. Copying the folder now. You good?”
“Oh, yeah.” She chuckled. “Those guys helped my poor little drunk, lost self back to the party. I’m down by the auction again.”
“That was some Oscar-worthy shit back there.” I laughed.
Knox joined me. “Yeah. You really sold that show, Piper. It was fun being able to watch the whole thing go down. Being Overwatch is badass!”
“Glad I could entertain you. Now hurry up and get those files, Wes. We need to get the hell out of here.”
“Roger that,” I responded.
A sound behind me caught my attention. A toilet flushing. I spun in my chair to see a door in the far corner of the room opening.
Fuck. There was a bathroom in this room? It wasn’t on the original house plans I’d downloaded, but at some point, they must have remodeled in here and added one... and I hadn’t even noticed the new door I’d been so pumped to find the computers. Major rookie mistake. I jumped under the desk and pulled the chair in front of me to conceal myself.
“We have a problem,” I whispered into my comms as I heard the door creak open.
“What’s going on?” Piper asked.
“I think there was another room in here, and the door just opened.”
