My heart hammered in my chest as she started to rise to meet me, our lips moving closer and closer together—back to where they should have been for the last decade.
But just before our lips touched, her eyes snapped open like the spell cast over us suddenly shattered.
“I can’t,” she whispered as she backed away.
“Why not?” I stepped back toward her. “You’re not over me, Jenna, and I’m not over you. Don’t lie and pretend like you don’t want this kiss as much as I do.”
She sucked her lip between her teeth and shook her head. “I... I have a boyfriend. I can’t do this, Carter.”
With a soft chuckle, I shook my head. “Oh, that’s right. You and Evan. That’s the only thing stopping you, huh?”
She lifted her chin and straightened her shoulders. “Exactly. Me and Evan.”
“Evan. Your handsome and great boyfriend.” I smirked as I impaled her with a knowing stare.
“Would you stop with the handsome and great already?” She chuckled as she shook her head.
“Well, he is handsome and great.”
“Yes, he is.”
“But do you know what he’s not?” I lifted the corner of my lip as I decided to jump off the cliff and see where I landed.
“What?” She furrowed her brow.
“Your boyfriend.”
Those beautiful brown eyes snapped open wide. “What?”
I leaned forward into her space and whispered, “I know.”
The color drained from her face as she stared at me, blinking. “Know... what?” she finally managed to say.
“I know that Evan isn’t your boyfriend.”
More silence. More blinking.
As my smirk deepened, the color returned to her face as a deep crimson.
“Oh my God!” she breathed before spinning and bolting toward the ramp off the yacht.
“Jenna!” I called while I went after her. “Jenna, stop!”
She beelined down the ramp and started down the docks. I quickened my pace to keep up.
“Go away!” she called back while she started to run.
“Would you stop?” I shouted as I closed in on her.
“Go! Away!”
I caught up to her at the edge of the docks and reached forward, snagging her by her arm.
“Let me go, Carter!”
“Would you stop running then?”
“No!” She ripped herself out of my grip and stepped back. “I am dying of embarrassment right now, and I just want to be alone. Don’t follow me!”
