“Does that answer your question?” I said as I moved my hips to line up with him.
A cocky smile lifted his lip, and he reached up and slid his hand behind my head. A powerful pull brought my lips back to his as I sank down his shaft.
We moaned in unison when I took him all the way inside me.
Home.
It felt like home to be with him this way again. Our bodies merged in a way that deepened our unbreakable connection. It was transcendent, and I felt the cracks of my heart healing with each thrust of his hips.
He sat upright, pulling me against him, our sweat-slicked bodies pressing together as I rocked my hips against him.
“I missed you, Jenna,” he breathed against my lips as he cupped my ass and pulled me deeper. “God, did I miss you.”
I panted and closed my eyes, burying myself in his kiss as the heat built in my body, spreading through every inch of my skin. I closed my eyes, digging my nails into his muscular back as I crashed over the edge again.
His grip on my hips tightened as he slowed me to a stop, calling out my name as we clung to each other, shuddering. When his body finally relaxed again, I collapsed forward into his arms.
“Holy shit,” he whispered as he wrapped his arms around me.
“Yeah. Holy shit,” I murmured against his chest. “That was not at all what I’d planned on happening today.”
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping though.” His laugh shook his chest, and I slapped it.
“You’re terrible.”
“I’m a dude. A dude who really missed doing that with you.”
“Yeah. I missed that too,” I admitted.
“Jenna?” he whispered, then exhaled a breath. “I...”
I heard the truth in the lengthy pause that was suspended between us. The weight of the words he’d said to me in Hawaii that had stuck with me since. I knew what he was about to say... what he wanted to say.
Hearing those words should have been the best vow I’d ever heard like it had been a decade ago, but doom pierced my gut as I started to envision him finishing that sentence. It would unleash those same emotions inside of me. Emotions I couldn’t have. I’d succumbed to my carnal desires tonight, but it still didn’t change the fact that this thing between us wasn’t going to last. We were on a runaway train of passion that had no destination other than hitting the end of the track and ending in a fiery explosion. An explosion that was going to hurt... devastate me... wreck me.
Instead of letting him speak, I leaned over and closed his mouth with a kiss.
“Goodnight, Carter.” I curled up against him and closed my eyes when his arms tightened around me. As his breathing slowed down to a soft, rhythmic drone, I climbed out of his arms and stared down at the man sleeping in my bed.
This can’t happen, Jenna. You have to stop.
Like an alcoholic staring at a bottle of whiskey taunting her to drink it, I knew I had to find a way to put a stop to this thing before the upcoming crash didn’t just hurt me... It would destroy me.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
CARTER
––––––––
Unbelievable.
Jenna had ghosted me.
I’d reached over to snuggle her this morning, and instead of my arms wrapping around the beautiful woman I couldn’t believe was back in my life, they’d encircled a big, snoring, slobbery furball.
After giving Arnold a few scratches and feeling grateful it wasn’t Jenna’s morning breath that had been that bad, I got up and went looking for her. Nothing. Nada. No note. No explanation. Just gone.
And I remembered that feeling oh too well, just like it had gutted me when she’d ghosted me in Hawaii. But unlike the time she’d taken off and left me then, this time, I knew she couldn’t have gotten far. The Bronson’s had a full day of golf at Peninsula State Park planned out for all of us, and if I knew Aunt Tilly, she’d have insisted Jenna attend too.
