“Yeah, I think I do.”

“Good. Well we can enjoy some play time together. And if this works out… I’d still love to go to the mosh with you next weekend.”

“Oh, yes!” They’d practically forgotten about that with everything else going on, even though it was the most exciting part. “You never told me what type of pup you are.”

Josh laughed. “Guess.”

“German Shepherd? Husky? St. Bernard? One of those powerful dogs that takes care of all the others.”

“Got it in the first shot. Well, the third one. A St. Bernard.”

“I can definitely see it.” Ash had always imagined that their ideal Daddy would be a Handler, but maybe having an Alpha dog playing and looking out for them would be even better.

“How about you. No… let me guess. Um… Cocker Spaniel? Maltese? Pug? Shih Tzu?”

“Very close. Pomeranian.”

“Ha! Pomeranians are so fancy. But I bet you are sometimes, too. And they’re friendly and cuddly. I bet you’re adorable.”

“Awww… thank you.”

The idea of prancing around the puppy area with Josh was enough to finally bring a smile back to their lips. They’d nip around at his heels and he would chase them around, then gently herd them back when they got tired out. It sounded magnificent.

Maybe this really could work. Josh was such a nice Daddy and they really should give him a chance.

They tossed the last couple bites of sandwich into their mouth, finally excited to get started. “Can we see the playroom now?”

“Of course, baby. You go wash your hands and I’ll clean up. I think you’ll find some things you like in there.”

“Perfect.”

Or at least they wanted it to be.

Chapter 18

Ash

Ash checked the sign in the hallway to make sure they were heading toward Landon’s place. They’d been over for three game nights so far, but increasingly everyone ended up at Dustin’s spacious house instead of switching between the three smaller apartments.

Landon was already waiting for them, his head sticking out the door. He was wearing a faded gray t-shirt that hung loosely on his slender shoulders. The winter hat over his shoulder-length blond hair gave him a grungy skateboarder look. Or maybe a drummer in a garage band. That article of clothing told them all they needed to know to determine his gender today.

As usual, Ash felt a little pulse of attraction on seeing him.

Because they totally needed to be attracted to one more impossible person right now.

It wasn’t anything big, just a little jolt of fascination, an awareness that had grown as they spent more time together and Landon opened it.

It was nothing like the torch Ash was carrying for Zhong, though.

What Ash needed most from Landon was friendship and advice, which is why they’d texted him with an emergency at ridiculous o’clock on a Friday morning when they woke up and started freaking out

Fortunately, Landon got up early to run, even over summer break.

The second Ash reached the door, Landon folded them into a hug. How are you doing?

Confused? Sad? Frustrated? I have no idea.

Come on in.
