Jamie passed by with some little slips of paper and a pencil, as he had for the last competition.
“What number is my Daddy?” Isaac asked, not at all quietly.
“Eight.”
“That’s the circle on top of the other circle,” Isaac announced, carefully writing the number on each piece of paper.
Remi was starting to get a sense of Isaac’s regressed age. It seemed to be around three or four, which made him just as cute as a button.
When Jamie announced that it was time to clean up the chairs, Isaac pouted.
“Hey, none of that, baby boy,” Remi gently chided. “Do you think that Roarasaurus can pull on this string right here?” He held up the rope end that would untie the bow.
“Oh yes! Roary’s good at that.”
“One, two, three, go!” he counted down.
Isaac giggled and fell back a step when it released.
“Now, do you think you and Roarasaurus can untangle the mystery rope?”
“‘Course we can.”
The next two games went much faster, with the Daddies and then the boys saying a few short lines. Remi played along good naturedly, mostly because participating seemed to bring Isaac such joy. The rest of the guests and all of the party games were irrelevant to him.
But even he had to laugh when Isaac was supposed to say “Daddy, do I get a reward for being good?” but called out “Daddy? Pressies for me?” instead.
“Yes, baby,” Remi assured him to everyone’s amusement.
After that, the games seemed to be over, and everyone milled around. Isaac immediately started chatting with another boy, and Remi trailed happily in his wake. Even as a little, Isaac asked the most interesting questions, showing he’d been paying much more attention to everyone in the room than Remi realized.
Remi had scarcely given anyone else a second thought, but Isaac seemed to have a specific compliment for everyone and even suggestions on who they should talk to.
Usually Remi disliked gatherings of strangers like this, but with Isaac pressed against his chest while he chattered, Remi found himself enjoying it. He still had no desire to get to know anyone else, but he could see that for Isaac, this was a form of play.
After Isaac sent one thoughtful Daddy off in another sub’s direction, he dragged Remi over to the snack table. “Daddy? Can I have more of the bubbly juice?”
Cuteness overload. Thank goodness it was just sparkling cider and nothing alcoholic. Remi could scarcely imagine what Isaac was like drunk. “Only one more,” Remi agreed, thinking about all of the sugars and late-night snacks. He needed to set some limits for his boy. “We don’t want you needing to pee in the middle of the night.”
Isaac gave him a look that was all mischief. “Well, it won’t matter if I’m wearing my diaper, will it?”
For a moment, Remi forgot how to breathe. He was already imagining Isaac playing at his feet, cute little diapered butt in the air as he pushed his toys around. Or how he would lay Isaac back on the bed, pulling back the crinkling padding and wiping down his…
Remi’s mind kind of ground to a halt. Was that even on the menu this weekend? And would he know what to do? Could he make sure that Isaac enjoyed it?
There was nothing more intimate than changing a boy’s diaper—that deep-rooted feeling of control and contentment in knowing that your boy had given you everything, and was holding nothing back. It was sexy and sweet at the same time, a show of trust unlike anything he’d experienced elsewhere.
But if Isaac was worried about doing “anything else” with him, the chances were that they wouldn’t get there.
He found himself unreasonably disappointed. It was becoming more clear to him with each passing moment that Isaac’s anatomy inside that diaper wouldn’t matter to him—Isaac was all boy in his eyes—but it might matter a lot to Isaac. And there was a really good chance that he might screw it up.
Remi poured Isaac a cup of cider automatically, only half attending to the new conversation he’d just struck up. He was just in time to introduce himself. They were talking to the boy in the pink shirt now, a bald, older man with sad eyes who Remi had noticed only because both of the lodge owners kept circling around him. It certainly looked like there was some attraction going on there with the way they were both encouraging him during the competition.
He was alone now, though, looking forlornly after the Daddy half of the couple who was pulling more bottles of cider from the small fridge.
Isaac, of course, picked up on it right away. “Neil, you don’t have to be sad. Your Daddy will come back soon.”
Remi could see that the boy, Neil, was baffled and he repressed a smirk. It seemed that the boy hadn’t yet figured out the couple’s interest, though it was clear to everyone else in the room.
