Was he mad she had been sick?

Or something else?

“I’m not going to drive you around while you molest her in the backseat. Whatever the fuck you do when I drop you off, that’s up to you. But I’m not going to sit there and listen to it or watch it, Todrey. You fucking hear me?”

“Oh, you have morals now. That’s a rich take.”

Nausea swelled in Gigi.

Had he been touching her?

Was he—

“Fuck this,” the guard hissed, pointing a finger at Jensen as he added, “I am done. Drive yourself the rest of the way. I’m not going any further.”

The man started to walk away.

Jensen was laughing again.

It was such a morbid sound. Evil, but pleased. Like he had nothing left to lose. The gun he pulled out from beneath his suit jacket said he didn’t care at all.

Gigi choked back a sob, her dry, cracked lips parting to warn the guard walking away because even if he had helped to do this … weren’t his words enough to say the man had some sort of conscience?

Nothing came out.

She still couldn’t talk.

Jensen didn’t hesitate, the gun in his hand snapping back hard when he pulled the trigger. As if the world wasn’t already moving too slow around Gigi, it came to a crawl as she saw the bullet plug into the back of the guard’s head.

Blood sprayed.

Gigi coughed on bile.

He hit the ground face first.

She didn’t even have time to process what was happening before Jensen wiped the gun on his sleeve, tucked it away beneath his jacket, and turned back for the car. Maybe had she been in her right mind, she could have pretended that she was still passed out.

Instead, she just watched him walk toward her. Each step was more ominous than the last as his angry expression changed to something far more sinister.

“Awake, are you?” he asked.

Gigi didn’t reply.

Didn’t even try.

Kneeling right outside the car’s open door, Jensen came eye-level with Gigi. Tremors rocked her from head to toe, and the tears had started falling again. Silent tears because she had a feeling this man would enjoy the sounds of her cries far too much.

“Do you want to know what I’m going to do with you?” he asked.

She still said nothing.

Jensen grinned, the glint in his eye turning darker as he reached out to stroke her cheek with two fingers. The soft touch quickly turned harsh when his grip dug into her cheek and jaw, and he pushed her head back into an awkward position as he stood up. It forced her to stare up at him. Something she didn’t want to do at all.

“Doesn’t matter,” he said. “It’ll all be the same to you, but you’ll learn to like it. They all did, my girl. They all learned, but I got bored … I got bored of the same shit, the same girls. They all did the same things; heads full of air but they’d do what they were told. I finally got to pick one of my own. You. See, that’s why you’re special. I picked you.”

She didn’t want to be picked.

Whatever that meant.
