FALLON

As if this isn’t mortifying enough, the officer looks me up and down in Jett’s sweatshirt, which is at least ten sizes too big for me. I’m thankful it’s covering everything. As humiliating as this is, it would be a lot worse if I were standing here in lingerie that leaves little to the imagination.

He nods curtly before again instructing us to obtain our IDs.

“Mine is in my car. No…umm…pockets in this outfit.” I point toward my parked vehicle sitting a few feet from us. “Can I walk over there to get it?”

He exhales an annoyed breath. “Go. Quickly.”

Doing my best to rock the stiletto and oversized sweatshirt look, I rush to my car. While leaning inside, I immediately grab my phone and click on Cassandra’s contact information, praying she doesn’t keep her phone on silent at night. I’m not sure she ever sleeps, she’s a workaholic, so I think chances are high that she’ll answer. Fortunately, she does right away.

“Everything okay?” she immediately asks.

I whisper as I pretend to search for my purse. “No. I’m being arrested. I need your help.”

She tries to talk, but I interrupt to give her a quick synopsis. “In the woods having sex with Jett and got busted by the fuzz. I’m supposed to be fetching my ID from my car. I’ve got ten seconds until I need to be back. What should I do? He thinks I’m a prostitute.”

She lets out a laugh. “Why is that?”

“Because I’m wearing next to nothing. Focus,” I snap.

“Did you at least come before he busted you?”

“Cassandra,” I whisper-yell.

She laughs again. “Classic. Grab your ID and give him your phone. He and I will have a little chat. Don’t worry.” She seems totally at ease, ramping down my own anxiety a few notches.

I exhale a long breath in relief. No one fucks with Cassandra and lives to tell about it. “Thank you.”

I lift my body out of the car and walk back toward the policeman and Jett. The officer has his eyes on Jett's ID, a giant flashlight shining on it, as if he doesn’t know who he is.

I hand him my phone along with my ID.

“What’s this?”

“My attorney is on the phone,” I answer. “She wants to talk to you.”

He mumbles a few expletives about lawyers under his breath before taking the phone and placing it to his ear.

“Yes, ma’am.”

We can’t hear Cassandra’s words, only that she’s speaking. We can hear him answering her barrage of questions though.

“Officer Joseph Murphy, ma’am.”

“Badge number 168735.”

“That won’t be necessary, ma’am.”

“No, ma’am, I haven’t touched them at all.”

“They were in their vehicle in a public park in the middle of the night.”

“No, ma’am. No noises.”

His face blushes. “I couldn’t really say. You’d have to ask her.”

I roll my eyes. I know what she asked him.
