“We get more than three, right?”

“This is a different kind of game.” He looked up, gave her a quick smile.

It did feel nice to have a clue.

And what had she done to her life that she was reduced to trying to solve a mystery like some sort of inept PI?

“Maybe it’s related to money? Maybe a bank?” She named as many as came to mind, but the email and password combination didn’t get them access anywhere.

“What else could it be?” Sam paced across the kitchen. “Let’s try the places I have accounts.” He started rattling off names. She sat at his laptop and typed.

PayPal, Venmo, CashApp. No, no, and no.

More banks.

Nothing.

“You were in Denver,” he said. “Let’s look up—”

His phone rang.

“It’s Jon.” He answered and put it on speaker. “This is Sam. Eliza’s here too.”

“I have some information.”

“Great.” Sam slid the laptop back to himself and opened a note. “Go.”

“We need to meet.” The man’s voice was deep.

The confusion on Sam’s face probably matched her own. “Why?”

“Grant wants to see you,” Jon said. “You’re in the mountains, right? How far are you from North Conway?”

“About thirty minutes.”

“Could you meet us there?”

Sam met her eyes, clearly waiting for her to weigh in.

“Whatever you think,” she said.

His gaze darkened. “Hold on, Jon.” And he muted the phone. “Is it a good idea or not?”

“I don’t know. What do you think?”

“I’m not making all the decisions, Eliza. This one’s on you.”

Oh. She hated choices, especially when nobody would give her counsel. Her life’s motto—what would anybody else do? Because her decisions always blew up in her face.

But Sam had that stubborn set to his jaw. He’d wait her out if it took all day.

“Yeah, okay. We need to know what they learned. We should trust their judgment.”

He tapped the phone to unmute it. “Just tell us where and when.”

Eliza stepped into the old-house-turned-business in North Conway, her sneakers loud on the wood floors. Behind her, Sam pulled the door closed against the chilly wind.
