Got a look at the guy. Spiked blond hair—same one who’d come after them at Eliza’s mom’s house. Which meant the big one was here too.
He wanted to look for Eliza, but Spike charged.
Sam aimed a kick at his head.
Spike stumbled, landed on his back and flipped over.
“Sam!” Her voice came from farther away.
Spike was about to launch himself forward.
Sam yanked the gun from its holster beneath his shirt. Didn’t have time to aim as Spike came toward him.
Hopped out of the way, whacked the butt of it hard on Spike’s head.
The guy went down to his hands and knees, started to rise again.
Sam whacked him again, hard.
The attacker collapsed
Sam turned, scanned the street.
Eliza was seventy, eighty yards away, being carried. Feet kicking. Fighting with everything in her. To no avail.
He had the gun but couldn’t risk a bullet hitting her. He ran that direction.
But a trunk opened. Goatee—Gil—tossed her inside. Slammed the lid. Ran to the driver’s door.
Sam stopped to aim but didn’t have time to get a shot off before Gil dove into the sedan.
Gil pulled out of the spot. Hit the gas, gunned it in the opposite direction.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Eliza groped in darkness. There had to be a safety latch, right? Somewhere?
She had to get out of this trunk.
Because if they got her, they’d get the information out of her. And once they did that…
They’d kill her.
They’d kill her and bury her body. Nobody would ever find her.
But there was no latch. Only darkness and hopelessness as Gil hit the gas. The man was ruthless. The thought of being his captive…
Dear God, help!
What had Grant said to her? That God had her? But it felt like nobody had anything. The world was spinning out of control like the wheels beneath the car.
But…but words filled her mind, her heart. Words she had no memory of, and yet…
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”
She did. She did trust Him. She didn’t know why or when or how, but she felt a deep faith in her heart that she couldn’t explain.
“Help me!” She shouted the words as if He wouldn’t be able to hear through the trunk. “I need You. You promised me it would be okay. You promised!”
