Finally, Jones said, “Expose them how?”

She licked her lips. “Um, I think…” She looked toward Jon, but he added nothing. “I learned today that I was in Denver. I think maybe I left evidence there.”

“Why Denver?”

She shrugged.

“You don’t remember why you went to Denver?”

“I didn’t remember any of this until lunch today. It’s coming back, but I haven’t put the pieces together.”

Again, the man said nothing. No questions. No comments. Just…silence.

Sam was itching to defend Eliza. Or just stand up and leave. Those two thugs were lucky to be alive. Sam and Jon had done nothing wrong, and Eliza’s only crime was nearly getting kidnapped.

But Jon said nothing.

Eliza said nothing.

And Sam wasn’t about to be the jerk who stuck his foot in his mouth. He’d done enough of that today.

After what felt like ten minutes but was probably more like three, Jones sighed. “All right then.” He pushed back in his chair and stood. “You’re free to go. But Miss Pelletier?”

She was already standing, clearly as anxious to be out of there as Sam was. “Yes?”

“When you get your memory back, would you call me?” He handed her a business card. “You brought these people to my state. We need to know what’s going on.”

A single nod, and they filed out of the interview room.

Grant was leaning against a desk in the small police department. He pushed away when they approached. “I got the truck. Everything okay?”

“Yup.” Sam kept walking until they were outside. It felt like they’d been in there for hours, but the sun was still poking through the clouds.

They climbed into the truck, Sam and Eliza in the roomy backseat of the cab. Jon started it up but didn’t move. “That was fun.”

“You can’t blame them for wanting the story,” Grant said. “That was the third incident in a couple of days.”

“At least Gil and Elliot are in custody.” Eliza clicked on her seatbelt. “I can breathe easier.”

“They are in custody, but I wouldn't let my guard down.” This from Jon, who met Sam’s eyes in the rearview mirror.

“What?”

“Gil told me how they found us.” He focused on Grant. “They were watching you. I thought I spotted a tail when we left Coventry this morning.”

“I figured that out when you made all those quick turns.” Grant didn’t sound happy. “I assumed it was a reporter.”

Right. That probably happened a lot when Denise Masters was involved.

“Me too,” Jon said. “I lost him.”

“Apparently not.” Sam couldn’t help the tone—or the volume. “You led them right to us.”

Again, that steady gaze in the rearview. “I’m a professional. I know what I’m doing.”

But his eye contact didn’t hold. He looked down. A second later, he held his phone up.

Eliza leaned in to see the photo.
