But he and the women were in a strange car, disguised. This should work.

This should work.

Unless his enemies had seen him earlier.

He should have walked the other direction to steal the car. Stupid move on his part.

But he was disguised.

This should work.

The words were still resonating in his mind when he caught movement to his left. A white Mercedes van moved out of a parking space.

Right at him.

He slammed the brakes.

Realized his mistake a second too late.

The van stopped in his path.

Its doors slid open.

Men streamed out. Guns raised.

“Down, down!” Michael grabbed Leila beside him, shoved her to the floorboard as he ducked as low as he could get. He checked the rearview mirror, thinking he’d reverse, but there was a car behind them.

They were trapped.

He rammed the car, desperate to get them out of there. But there was nowhere to go.

A gunshot boomed.

The windshield exploded.

The women screamed.

Michael grabbed his gun and shifted it into his left hand, then grabbed Leila’s arm with his right. He was going to hang onto her, no matter what happened.

He would not lose her again.

He risked a look, searching for an enemy to take out. Aimed.

Before he could get a shot off, a bullet whizzed by his ear.

Shouting in Arabic, too fast for him to translate.

He waited for a guard to show himself, gaze flicking from window to window. He was ready. He’d shoot them all if he had to.

If he could.

He wouldn’t lose her.

He couldn’t.

A head popped up to his left. He swung his weapon that direction.

His window exploded.
