FANTOM

The first threat appeared at 2:13 in the morning.

Eleven words buried inside a conversation no one was ever supposed to find.

When the horizon turns black, the innocent will choose their own deaths.

I read the message twice.

Then a third time.

Outside the reinforced windows of Shadow Division’s command center, darkness covered the Alaskan harbor. Fog rolled between the warehouses, swallowing the lights along Cutter’s dock. Somewhere beyond the steel walls, waves struck the pilings in a slow, steady rhythm.

Usually, the sound calmed me.

Tonight, it felt like a countdown.

I leaned closer to the monitor. The conversation surrounding the message looked harmless—shipping schedules, weather conditions, complaints about delayed cargo. The kind of meaningless noise designed to make a man stop reading.

I’d learned a long time ago that meaningless noise was rarely meaningless.

The message disappeared.

I went still.
