Rook appears in the doorway and catches Caleb’s arm.

“Together, brother.”

The first officer emerges through the trees.

Caleb steps inside.

Rook pulls the door shut.

Darkness swallows us.

A beam of light passes across the narrow crack beside my face.

The federal team is on the other side.

Mac lowers his voice. “They’ll find the entrance.”

“How long?” Rook asks.

“Ten minutes if they have the original plans.”

“And if Graves gave them the plans?”

“Two.”

Cobra shines his flashlight down the tunnel. “Then I suggest we quit standing here.”

We hurry into the darkness.

Behind us, metal scrapes against stone.

The tunnel is barely wide enough for one man.

Cold water runs along the floor, and rusted cables hang from the ceiling. The passage hasn’t been maintained in decades.

Mac moves ahead of us with one hand against the wall.

He’s injured.

Exhausted.

Still, he knows exactly where he’s going.

That doesn’t make me trust him.

It makes him useful.

The federal team breaches the entrance behind us.

Voices echo through the passage.

“Stop! Federal agents!”
