I smiled to myself. “Perhaps not.”

My feet were struggling to settle anywhere, anxiously pacing back and forth in our room in Amaris. Waiting. And waiting. It was past midnight, and he was not here.

I stopped. My heart beating out of my chest when his presence drew shivers across my skin.

The door cracked open.

Kilian stepped in, covered in blood all over. “Not mine,” he said, starting to drop his weapons on the ground and unbuttoning his leathers. “How was your day, my love?”

“How was my day?”

He raised a brow, taking off his jacket until he stood there topless, muscles streaked with blood. “Was it not good?”

I followed him into the bathroom, taking the cloth he held under the sink and pulling him to face me. “What happened?” I asked, cleaning his face first and then his body, making sure to be careful around the bruising and the scratches.

He watched me so intently, gaze latching onto every little detail on my face. “Why was your day not good?”

“Kil, what the hells happened?”

Then those silver eyes turned so gentle, so soft. “Did something happen?”

I sighed. “Kil.”

He lifted a blood-stained hand to my face, ghosting it over my jaw. “Something is wrong.”

“Yes. Look at you.”

“No. Something else.”

I pulled his hand down and cleaned it, pulling his wedding band off to rinse it under the sink. “Get in the bath.”

His reflection remained behind me for a long while, but he obeyed my words and slowly got in the bath. “You don’t want to tell me.”

“I don’t know what to tell you.”

He leaned his head back and just looked at me. Distracted and lost in his perusal, I had not noticed how dark the room had grown, or how cold it had become or that the yellow candlelight had turned grey.

“Whose blood is it?” I asked, washing his hair.

“Didn’t have time to ask for their names.”

“Is this why you let me spend the day alone, so you could go around doing this?”

“No.” He raised a hand and pinched my chin. “Missed me?”

“Yes. Hated this stupid idea. Why would I need to be out there on my own when I can simply be with you?”

“Thought you might have wanted or needed the time.”

“Never again.”

His mouth slowly pulled in the most sinful smile. “The second drawer on my desk. Check it.”

Still confused, I stood and reached for the pile of papers in his second drawer. Notes of all sorts about a…dream veil. Kilian had come across my notes on Eamon’s Book of Dreams and finally made some more sense in my discovery.

He slipped behind me, still soaked, a towel around his waist. “Smart girl.”

Heavens. He’d figured out so much. “You really think we can replicate the dream veil to trap them again?”
