Someone knocked on our door.

Kilian looked like he didn’t even hear it. Nor the second or the third knock. His eyes were entirely on me, burning though every layer of truth and past every lie I was planning on telling him.

“Come in,” I said when he wouldn’t answer.

Mal leaned against my door, dishevelled head to toe, his eyes shut halfway through while they bore into me. “What happened? Why are you bleeding?”

“Nothing.”

He raised a brow. “Nothing? It doesn’t look like nothing. Why is my brother on the verge of losing his mind?”

I looked over at Kilian, those silver eyes were lost behind a curtain of black, void of life, sucking in every bit of light from the room. “Darling?”

Mal straightened and cautiously pushed forward. “Kil?” He took a few more steps forward. “Brother.”

The air chilled from a different sort of cold.

“Get out,” Mal ordered, slowly reaching closer. “Go, Snow, now.”

I shook my head. “I’m not leaving him. What is happening?”

“Snow,” Mal barked and Kilian’s head snapped in his direction. “Oh, hells. I was being nice, come on now, big brother,” he said, raising both hands up.

“Mal, what is happening?”

The younger brother kneeled between us, putting a hand on Kilian. Black spidery veins crawled over his face and he groaned, almost in pain, his breathing growing laboured.

Kilian caught his wrist and pushed him off. “You’re making this a habit,” my husband said, returning back to normal.

Mal dropped to the floor, panting and cringing. “Ungrateful shit.”

Kilian stretched his neck. “And don’t ever shout at my wife.”

Mal scoffed, glancing at the little half moon scratches on my arm and freezing entirely. Hiz gaze remained fixed there, the dark pupils pulsing almost.

A lighter knock rang about the quiet room. “Can I come in now?” Thora asked, peeking over the door. “Oh, I can.” She rushed to us, kneeling besides Mal and whispering, “What is that we are doing?”

“Nothing,” I said, giving her a smile and raising my knees to my chest to cover up my arms.

Her brows creased. “Malik said he felt something and told me to stay back till it wasn’t dangerous. Did something happen?”

“Nothing.”

“Say that word one more time,” Mal grit out, his jaw ticking.

“Speak to her like that one more time,” Kilian bit back and the two brothers shared a dark look.

“Why? You’re going to lose your shit again? You could have hurt her.”

My husband flinched.

I put a hand on his, trying to pull him towards me. “You can never hurt me.”

“Like hell he can.”

Thora reached for him, wrapping her hand around his wrist. “Let’s go now, Malik, they are doing fine. Please,” she pleaded again when he wouldn't move, and the younger brother’s eyes rose to her.

He stood along with her, slowly and discreetly sliding his hand down to hers until their fingers linked through each others. “If you’re struggling to control your magic, maybe you might need to take one page from our daddy dearest’s practices.”
