He smiled bashfully and reluctantly nodded his head. “If you insist.”

“I do. And I’ll see you later, or tomorrow. I’ll be here a week. You’ll see me a lot.”

“I look forward to it, ma’am.”

“Harper. My name is Harper.”

“Ms. Harper,” Henry said. “Enjoy your meal. I’ll leave your extra key card at the front desk for you.”

“Thank you!” she said as she turned and headed back toward where Joel waited on the other side of the lobby.

“That was quick!” he said, when he saw her coming.

“Henry told me that the pastries can go quickly. We should hurry.”

“Let’s do it then,” he said, taking her elbow and guiding her into the restaurant.

Clay tossed his phone to the side with a soft snarl.

“Problem?” Cruz asked.

“She hasn’t read my email yet, or sent a text,” Clay said. “I’m hoping she’s okay, and not upset.”

“Why would she be upset?” Cruz asked.

“I don’t know. Something could have confused her. Things confuse a lot of people.”

“Call her.”

“No, I think a text is better.”

“Did you send her one?”

“No, I figured she’d reach out after she read my email.”

“That you say hasn’t been read yet.”

“Exactly.”

“Maybe it went to spam.”

“Why would it go to spam?”

“You ever emailed her before?”

“No.”

Cruz raised an eyebrow in Clay’s direction, but said no more.

“Maybe I’ll send her a text.”

“Good idea,” Cruz said, still studying the information on his laptop. It amazed him sometimes how his cousins ever managed to get anything done.

Clay picked up his phone and fiddled with it a little before shaking his head. “No. I’m not going to text her. The email is there. She’ll see it.”

“Your choice,” Cruz said.
