Slowly, she removes herself from me, and her jaw snaps back into its regular position. She stays on her knees, inhaling a few deep breaths. The sexiest smile I’ve ever seen lazily takes over her lips.

“I would’ve asked if I could finish—but the, well…” It’s hard to form the apology I want to give when my body and mind are still reeling from the strongest orgasm I’ve ever experienced.

She gives my thigh a squeeze before she stands up. “Zander, I wanted to taste you too, and let me just say, you taste divine.”

My life is complete in every way with Briar fully in it. It’s like a piece of me was missing before, and I was searching for it everywhere. When I admitted my feelings, the piece fell into place.

Now, allowing our bodies to connect in a way that they’ve yearned to over the years? It’s like I’m super-gluing that piece in place, never to be removed.

The puzzle is complete, and I want to frame it and hang it on my wall.

“Was it…weird that my banshee instincts kind of got involved?” She picks at her cuticles, her eyes scanning my face.

I take her hands in mine, both to hold them and to get her to stop hurting those perfect fingers. “It was hot. Insanely hot.”

Her shoulders relax, and she smiles up at me. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited to hear you say something like that.”

“You don’t know how long I’ve waited to tell you.” I wink, pulling her closer and wrapping her arms around me.

She grins up at me, and I bring my head down, pressing my lips to hers. We stay there for a few minutes, lips locked and arms wrapped tightly around one another.

When she pulls away, she has reddened cheeks and a nervous glimmer has returned to her eyes.

I rub her sides, giving her a squeeze. “Want to go take a shower?”

She nods, but doesn’t move away, hesitantly asking, “Would you…join me?”

With no hesitation myself, I take her hand and lead her to the bathroom. “You don’t have to ask me twice, love.”

Chapter 9

A MOMENT SO PERFECT

BRIAR

A FEW WEEKS LATER

My scalp tingles as Zander’s fingers run through it, my head in his lap as the TV plays. I haven’t been paying much attention to whatever is on; my mind has been too busy racing.

These past few weeks have been the best of my life. Zander and I have spent as much time as possible together, making up for the years we missed because both of us were too shy to admit our feelings. It’s been nearly perfect.

A few questions have swirled up in my mind, but I haven’t asked them. Even though logically I know I can ask him literally anything, the overthinking part of my brain is usually in control, hence why I have left them unasked.

But I’m going to do it. I’m going to ask him all my burning questions. Maybe I’ll start with the least hot ones, though.

“Can I ask you some things?” I open my eyes, rolling so that my head lies flat in his lap rather than on the side.

He looks down at me, nodding. “Of course. About the show, or…?”

“No. About, just, well, other things.”

“What’s on your mind?” His eyebrows crease together as his eyes search my face.

The way he worries about me so much is cute. It makes me feel safe and offers me reassurance that he truly cares. Though, the overthinking part of my mind occasionally tells me that this is all some prank.

“A few things,” I admit, my eyelids fluttering as his fingers resume their magic on my scalp. “The first thing I don’t really know how to ask, other than, well, directly—your parents. Do you want me to meet them at some point? You already know my entire family, so…”

He takes a deep breath, looking away and staring into the distance. With his free hand, he picks up the remote from the side table and clicks the TV off.
