He huffed a quiet laugh. “Yeah, well, don’t make me regret it.”
“I won’t,” she promised.
She knew by the look on Chance’s face that he had heard. She needed to find out exactly how good a dragon’s hearing was.
They wanted to tie up all of their loose ends before their trip, but a call came sooner than he would have liked.
Chance stood near the window with his phone on speaker. Jakob and Sven were on the other end and their patience thinned with every passing hour.
“You’ve delayed long enough,” Jakob’s voice was firm. “This is no longer contained.”
Sven didn’t interrupt, but Chance could sense his presence in the silence that followed.
“I told you I needed time,” Chance replied. Tension had already begun to coil throughout his body just beneath the surface.
“You had time,” Sven said then. “And now the consequences of that time are spreading beyond Noriveille.”
Chance’s jaw tightened slightly. “You think I don’t know that?” he shot back. “They’re already here. They made a move in broad daylight.”
“And next time it won’t be contained to a parking lot,” Jakob said bluntly. “If this escalates further, if your father pushes harder, it won’t be just a risk. Randi almost learned that the hard way.”
“You need to return,” Sven added and this time there was no softness and no room for argument. “Not eventually. Now.”
“Then we go.”
Chance turned sharply. From the look on her face, Randi hadn’t just caught the end of the conversation.
She had heard enough.
“Randi…” he started, but she shook her head.
“No, you don’t have to figure this out alone. We’ll do this together.”
Together.
And to him, that made all the difference.
Chapter 22
Randi
The first thing Randi noticed when they landed in the Iskara Northlands was the cold. After being in Florida, she had forgotten the deep, biting cold that settled into her bones and made itself at home there. It wasn’t unfamiliar but it was certainly an eye opener.
“You good?”
She smiled at Chance. “I am. Just hoping my Florida blood thickens up pretty quick.”
Randi spotted Bryn before the car even fully pulled up to the curb. They had flown into Stagholt just in case King Gunner was watching the airport in Noriveille. A train ride would transport them to their final destination. In the meantime, it was all about some quality family time.
Her sister was half out of the driver’s seat and waved both arms like she was trying to guide in a plane instead of greeting family. Nothing about Bryn had changed in that regard. She was still dramatic and incapable of subtlety.
The sight of her hit Randi square in the chest with a sudden rush of relief she’d been holding back since the flight landed.
“Randi!” Bryn shouted as if they were separated by miles instead of a narrow strip of pavement.
Randi laughed despite herself but was already moving faster. Her bag bumped against her hip. “You’re going to get us arrested for causing a scene.”
“Oh, please, these people need excitement in their lives.”
