I sat on the edge of the bed. “Cassie.”

“I heard him.”

“I know.”

“Tonight.”

“Yes.”

She nodded once. Twice. Her eyes stayed dry.

“I thought I’d be more dramatic,” she said.

“You are in shock.” Sava said.

“That sounds medical. I was hoping for dignified.”

“You can be both.”

Her mouth moved faintly. It was not a smile.

Sava crossed to the bed with the tablets and water. “Take these.”

“Will they make me stupid?”

“They will make you able to move without tearing my stitches.”

“Not the same question.”

“No. They will not make you stupid. I do not have that dosage.”

Cassie took the pills.

Her hand shook only once. I saw it. Sava saw it. Cassie saw both of us seeing it and set the glass down very carefully.

“I want to see my family,” she said.

“You will,” I answered.

She looked at me. That was dangerous. Her eyes were tired, yes, and pain-lidded, but Cassie saw too much when people tried to make promises in soft voices.

I reached for the calm again and pushed every other feeling down until the binding offered her nothing but steadiness.

“There is a way out,” I said.

Sava went still.

Cassie’s stare sharpened. “Out.”

“Yes.”

“Ronan just told me I have an appointment with death by committee tonight.”

“That is why tonight gives us the best opening.”

Sava’s eyes cut to me.

I didn’t look at her.
