He let out a long whistle that reverberated across the empty water.

Then, silence.

The wind had disappeared. The birds were holding their breath in anticipation.

The wildfire smoke had largely cleared and bright blue sky was spread out like a blanket above us. The leaves on the trees were greener, the water clearer. We weren’t even a half mile from camp and yet it felt like we traveled somewhere much further away.

Evan kicked off his shoes and walked up and down the beach, jumping around and burying his feet in the sand. “It’s paradise, how did you find it?”

“Completely by chance,” I told him as I shook out an old quilt and spread it out on the ground. “I think Sue may have subtly guided me here, though. She knew I needed a place to call my own, out of my mom’s sightline. I’d be out here for hours sometimes.”

“This is where you were coming from the day I arrived, right?”

I laid down on the quilt and stretched out, closing my eyes behind my sunglasses. There was an Evan-shaped spot beside me that he quickly found.

“I actually intended to spend every day out here to avoid the mystery guest, but that didn’t seem to work out—”

A hand gently grazed my hip beneath my shirt.

Evan was propped up on one elbow, a lazy smile teasing the corners of his lips. A look that had become so familiar. A look that felt like it was reserved for me.

“Avoiding you definitely didn’t work out,” I corrected quietly. Warmth danced across my skin, it swirled and bubbled inside me. Desire was filling me up like a balloon. As Evan teased the ties of my bikini bottoms I was about to pop.

“And yet you still made it difficult to pin you down,” he twisted a tie around his finger. It loosened in his grasp. “You’re positive it’s totally private out here?”

Something stirred inside me. “Only us and the moose.” I placed my hand atop Evan’s and guided it to my inner thigh, nudging it higher and higher until it laid flush against the spandex fabric of my swimsuit. The heat of his palm blended with the budding heat forming in my core.

He readjusted himself and bit his lip, leaning in for a kiss, “and do you think we should take advantage of that?”

“I definitely do.” I wrapped a hand around his neck and pulled his face towards mine.

Evan happily hummed as our lips met. He nipped at my lower lip, “what do you want to do with me, Dani?” he asked between breathy kisses.

Everything.

Heat bloomed across my skin. “I-I don’t know. A lot.” I anxiously chuckled.

There was one particular scene in Thorndown my mind traveled to. One that inspired dozens of fics because of how well it portrayed the—literal and figurative—climax of the “will they won’t they” between Sir Erwyn and Lady Premble. I had dozens of edits of that scene set to synthy sexy pop songs saved in a folder on my phone. I recognized the deep growls and breathy hums Evan made from that scene, fantasy and reality could so easily blur together.

I only wished I had a bodice he could rip off of me. I considered the structural integrity of my swimsuit top.

That scene and blocks of paragraphs on a backlit screen were where I’d wander to when desperately seeking romance from anyone, anywhere. When Nick was gone for the evening with no chance of returning before the bars closed. When he was sound asleep beside me after offering a few drunken thrusts and a beer flavored kiss.

As time passed my desperation waned, but the images and words were solidly planted in my mind, a reference point now. A deep shame formed as a twisted knot in my stomach, I could never verbalize those fantasies I’d had, and never admit to Evan that I already had many passing thoughts of what he’d do to me if it were up to my wildest imagination.

He played with a piece of my hair, looping the curl around his finger in a practiced fashion. “I can improvise. I’m quite good at that. Let’s say, for example, I touch you—” his hand slid up my stomach and he inched his fingers beneath my swimsuit to cup my breast “—here. Would that be what you want?” His thumb swirled around my nipple and I squirmed beneath him on the sand.

“Y-yes,” I gritted out as my shaking fingers undid the ties of my swimsuit. The fabric collapsed in a heap on the ground.

“And what about this?” His head ducked down, his breath hot on my skin. I twitched as his teeth scraped over the peach colored bud of my breast.

“Fuck, yes,” I moaned. Electricity was coursing through my veins, sparking wildly at my raw exposed ends.

Evan laughed and pulled away. He slid his swim trunks off. In the light of day and with my glasses on I could see clearly what was inside me last night, and fuck, was it incredible. I propped myself up on my knees as Evan started getting up, I pushed down his sternum until he laid back down.

He watched me eye his cock, and his eyes darkened so deeply with desire they reminded me of the deep blue lake before us. He was staring like he wanted to devour me whole. I wanted him to.

Something about me made him revert into a more brutish, less civilized man. He was only held back by the thinnest thread of refinement.
