As she lifted her hand to count down all the terrible things she knew about me, I reached out and grabbed her wrist, circling it with my thumb and index fingers before I spun her into me. Her soft body landed against mine, feeling so much better than it had any right to.

“If I didn’t know any better, which I do, I’d say you had the hots for me.”

She yanked her arm out of my grip, those eyes now shooting flames like they had tiny dragons in them hellbent on incinerating me. “I’m interested in you? Uh, no. I have more class than that, Kody. I hate to break it to you, but some women on this planet care more about what’s going on inside than out.”

“Oh yeah?” I took a pointed look between us, at where her front was still pressed flush against mine, her chest heaving and her cheeks rosy. “Then why haven’t you taken a step back yet? You’ve already basically admitted to thinking I’m hot, so you may as well tell me the truth, sis. You do have a thing for me, don’t you?”

I was far out on a ledge here and I knew I was about to fly off it headfirst, but she wasn’t the only one who knew how to push buttons. She’d pushed a few of mine today, and not only did I enjoy riling her up, I was riled up myself and getting my payback for her cockblocking me with her baby cousin.

But as she stared back at me, her eyes wide, her lips parted, and her chest still heaving, I realized that I might just be onto something. And that? That was the absolute last thing that anyone—including myself—needed me to know tonight.
