I finish up my report from this week for Lennox. We come up with some many ideas for the company. But I did find a few discrepancies from the warehouse and office there, sometimes … it’s nothing and can be explained.
I don’t believe one of the issues can be explained, though, and I’m not sure how Lennox will feel about firing someone. He’s the kindest man I’ve ever met. As I close my laptop, my phone buzzes.
I’m here. ~M
I go to the door, waiting until I can see her through the peephole. She’s carrying food and drinks for our girls’ night and work sleepover. Once I spot her, I swing the door wide.
“Welcome, mademoiselle.” I bow as she enters with her held high.
“Please, take my bags, peasant.” She holds her arms out, waiting for me.
I grab the bags, bumping her with my hip. “I have so much to tell you.”
“I’ll make the drinks, you start the food,” she directs. “I’ve been dying for you to spill this!”
“He was amazing! So attentive, and when Carter screwed my night up, he held me all night.” My belly flips and spins thinking of Lennox.
She blanches. “Slow it down. You didn’t sleep with Lennox while you were gone?”
“No!” I scowl. “We’re not dating, we work together.”
She frowns as she works on the drinks. “But you’re into him, Lola.”
“More than I should be, but that’s another story.”
She pours our drinks, glancing at me. “Lola, I know I told you to take it slow with Lennox, but that was before he was really ‘real’ and completely crazy about you.”
“Until I can get Carter out of my life, I can’t have anything with Lennox.” The thought alone is ripping my heart out.
Millie sits across from me, crossing her legs under her. “Lo, I need to say something, and you’re not gonna like it.”
“You’re scaring me.” I clutch my chest.
She waves me over, patting the couch. I sit, placing my drink on the table. “You know I love you, and I’ve never wanted anything more than for you to be happy.”
“I know, Millie. I love you too.” My heart begins to race.
“It’s time to give Carter an eviction notice and open yourself up to someone else.”
“I wish it were that simple.” I rub my temple.
Her jaw sets. “It is, Lola.”
“Do you think I want him around? In my business and treating me the way he does?”
Millie picks at invisible lint, lifting her eyes. “I’m not sure you’ll ever fully deal with Carter.”
“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do at this point, Millie.” I run my hands through my hair, trying not to pull hers. “I will say this—you’re the one who told me to take it slow with Lennox and now, you think I should dive in the deep end. Please, go ahead and tell me how to live my life because I’m sure the hell confused.”
