“Lachlan,” I rush over to him. “Where is he?”

His head drops. “He quit, refusing to have them fire him.”

“No, please tell me he didn’t.” I lay my hand on my neck.

He peeks up at me, his eyes glassy. “I’ve been the worst brother to him. I should’ve taken better care of him.”

“He feels the same way about you.”

“He does?” His frown deepens.

“Lan!” Maisyn scurries toward us, stopping when she sees her husband’s face. Her arms swallow him as he melts into her embrace. “I’m sorry, baby.”

“I don’t understand.” I grind my teeth. “It wasn’t a paper trail only; it was internal.”

Lachlan’s head snaps up. “What?”

“I swear to you, the information we shared with you after we returned from Charlotte was correct, but what’s there now isn’t.” I stroke my forehead, anger and hurt trade jabs at me. “Wait.”

Maisyn and Lachlan stare at me. “Lola, what is it?” Lachlan asks.

“IT, where is it?”

Lachlan shoves his hand in his pockets. “We have one, but I’m on board and a step ahead. We’re on it.”

“Babe, I’ve got Walker.” Maisyn hands him the phone, and he takes it and wonders off. “He loves you, you know?”

“I do.” I blush, smiling.

“I mean, Lachlan.”

I gape at her. “Huh? I thought you meant Lennox.”

“That’s why he loves you.” She bumps my shoulder. “They’re both tough, but Lachlan’s upset because he hasn’t been the brother Lenny deserves. It’s the reason he loves you with him, the change has been amazing.”

“He’s done the same thing for me, not even realizing he was doing it.” I bite my lip, kicking at the floor.

“We’re working on it,” Lachlan says as he rejoins us. “I wanted an outside source in case we have an inside issue.”

“I’m positive we do.” I cross my arms when I suddenly see Carter sauntering toward me. His eyes dart to Lachlan, but he doesn’t appear to be fazed by seeing him. “Carter, why are you here? I asked you to stay away.”

“I brought a few more of your things up.” He looks from me to Lachlan, sticking his hand out for him. Lan might break it for him today. “Hi, Carter Eastman.”

Lachlan narrows his eyes, as Maisyn straightens beside him. “Haven’t you been told to stay out of our building?”

Damn! Get it.

I tilt my head, getting a good angle for the fireworks. “What’s up?”

“I see the company you’ve been keeping hasn’t helped your manners, Lola girl.” Carter’s eyes darken.

Lachlan adjusts his stance. “Is there something we can do for you?”

“I’d like to speak privately with my wife.” Carter glares at Lachlan.

“Who would that be?” Lan’s arms flex.

I roll my eyes. “Cut the shit, Carter, and get on with it.”
