I hold her close, kissing the top of her head. “See, I am the favorite.” To which I earn my brother’s eye roll.
“Whatever.” He walks toward the dining room. “Hurry it up, we’re starved.”
“Jealous!”
A few minutes later, we sit to a family meal. Our father eats, and we help him to bed. I’m thankful my guest room is never dirty. Mom and Maisyn play with the girls, as Lachlan and I clean up.
“I’m meant to tell you. I’m taking Maisyn on our belated honeymoon.” He glances at me.
“Good, it’s about time.”
He rubs the back of his neck, my sign that he’s nervous. “Do you think you’ll be okay while we’re away?”
“Sure, it’ll be fine.” My stomach knots over and over.
He places his hands on the island. “I’ll only be a call away if you would need anything.”
“We’ll be fine, I promise.” I stare at him, hoping he’ll see my sincerity.
“Alright,”—he rubs his hands together—“what are your thoughts on babysitting?”
My eyes are as round as my gaping mouth. “Huh?”
