I grip the wheel, not wanting to talk about it. “Nothin’ honey.”
“Oh, but no. You brought it up, now you gotta spill the tea.” She grins sadistically. Well, it’s my story, so that’s the way I’m telling it. She eyed me evilly.
I turn my head, doing my best not to look in her direction. “I was joking, just messin’ around.”
“Huh, that’s odd.” She faces the front of the truck again, pecking away on her cell.
I glance at her; she’s still texting. I stretch to check Crank in the rearview mirror. He’s out cold. Now, I just stare at her typing her ass off. Who could she be talking to?
“Who is that?”
“Who’s what?” She grins, swaying in her seat to aggravate me.
I reposition myself, looking over at her. “Margo, who are you texting?”
“What? You mean this?” She bats her eyelashes, pretending to be innocent.
“You know, there was a time that I would believe the little act you have going on. But now that I know you’ve humped Crank’s gear shift, it’s not working, sweetheart.” I flash her my cheeky grin, as her mouth drops. She snaps it shut, smashing her mouth into a thin line.
“You are so bad. I’m breaking up with you. We are done!” Margo straightens in her seat, staring out the window.
I poke her side. “You can’t break up with me.”
“Done and over.” She crosses her arms with a huff.
“Nope, not happening, hooker.”
Her head spins, and I wait for the green puke to start. “You did not just call me a hooker?”
“I’m kidding, geez!” Since that didn’t work, I flipped the script. “You don’t have to tell me; I know it’s Spencer. I’m kinda at the point of giving up.”
“You shouldn’t do that; she’s falling for you like Jill goin’ down that hill.” Margo beams, smiling from ear to ear.
I raise my brow. “She’s in big trouble.”
“You can’t say anything!” Margo slaps at my arm.
“Spencer wasn’t either, but that didn’t stop her.” Little does Margo know; I’m not going to say a thing to Spencer because I know she’s already texting her. I can almost see what she’s saying to her.
With Spencer comes many different aspects of life. She’s more than I ever imagined having in my life. Spencer also scares the hell out of me. She’s like driving into the fray, praying you don’t crash and burn.
Spencer is full throttle, torqued in, and hang on until you cross the finish line. The fact is, I’m not sure I’m the one she needs or even deserves. Do I want to give her everything a woman like her should have? Yes. I’m just not sure I can.
The cab of the truck is quiet for the rest of the drive down the coast. Margo and Crank think I’m in the zone and don’t want anything to disrupt it. If they only knew, Spencer is all I can think about. She’s all I want, now.
The sun is starting to set by the time we get to the speedway. I’m happy to see the hauler is set up; I’m tired from this drive and ready to hit the bed. I haven’t heard a word from Spencer all day. I’m a little worried but don’t want to push her.
“So, are you guys staying with me tonight?”
Margo leans over the seat, smiling at Crank. “Whatcha think?”
“I’m down.” Crank stretches up to plant a kiss on her, leaving her giggling. It’s kind of sweet; I don’t remember Margo being in love before. I like it.
“Good, I hated being by myself the last time.”
Margo lays her hand on my cheek, rubbing it in hard. “Poor baby, we will stay with you.”
“Get the fuck off,” I knock her hand away. “y’all ain’t right.”
