“Now the difficult part,” he said. “And we can push this conversation off to a later time if you want, but I thought we’d get everything out in the open now.”
“André…” I sat up and turned to face him. “You’ve been nothing but patient with me.”
He smiled almost nervously. Even when the words were coming out of his mouth. “Where is this going? I feel silly even asking I’ve never been one to take things further than a good time. But I know that with you, I don’t want that good time to stop.”
“I don’t either,” I confessed. “Frankly, everything in my head is telling me I shouldn’t be doing this so soon, but I don’t want to listen to that voice in my head. I want to keep seeing you.”
André took my hand. “So, does that mean we’re in this for real?” he asked, ducking his gaze to our entwined fingers.
I bit my lip, considering. Not that there was much to consider. I was all in from the moment I smacked into his chest. “I think it means that if we’re both on the same page, we owe it to ourselves to give it a fair shot.”
André dropped my hand to cup my cheek, pulling me close for a kiss. His tongue speared into my mouth, and the embrace quickly grew heated. He guided me to straddle his lap. Of their own accord, my hips ground into his, feeling his cock harden beneath me. Once we couldn’t take it anymore, André carried me to the bedroom.
I’d never felt such security with Regan. Sex with him always felt like a chore—as monotonous as doing the laundry or taking out the trash. After a while, he didn’t ask anymore. With André? God, things were so different. The sex was passionate, heated and at the end of it all, left me so sated that I felt like I was floating. Those feelings were new to me, but I’d do whatever it took to keep chasing them.
A soft buzzing woke me up the next morning. I couldn’t figure out what it was and where it was coming from. Eventually, André got out of bed to investigate, leaving me to snuggle under the blankets a little bit longer.
He padded around the room, picking up our clothes that littered the floor and checking each of our phones. I flinched when he leaned over me, but arched into the touch when he nuzzled my neck.
“Mm, five more minutes Dad,” I whined, trying to tug him back into bed.
But I pried my eyes open anyway. André gave me a groggy smile. “It’s your brother. You might want to call him back. I’ll go order breakfast.” He kissed me again, shuffling into a pair of shorts as he left the room.
I got out of bed and dialed Dylan’s number. As it rang, I went into the bathroom to get some water.
“Where the hell have you been? I’ve been trying to call you for hours!” Dylan screamed into the phone, so loudly that I had to hold it away from my ear.
“Sleeping mostly,” I said. “What’s going on? Is Dad okay?”
“Dad’s fine. Regan never surrendered. He cut off his ankle monitor. He’s missing.”
Chapter Eleven
I couldn’t go home. I really wanted to go home, but I couldn’t. It wasn’t safe. Every available officer in the state of Georgia was out looking for Regan, and I was ordered to stay put. Dylan was bringing a detective to me.
I waited, sitting on a barstool while André tried and failed to get me to drink some water in between cleaning up the broken glass in the bathroom. When Dylan told me that Regan was missing, I dropped the glass in my hand. My phone went next, and then I blacked out. I hadn’t told André what happened, only managing to tell him that Dylan was coming and beg him to shut the curtains.
Given the events of the morning, he was surprisingly calm.
He was pleading for me to drink again when there was a knock at the door, and he went to open it. When the detective strolled in behind my brother, André cast a glance in my direction. “David, what’s going on?”
“He hasn’t told you?” Dylan asked.
“No, all he said was that you were coming over and he asked me to pull the curtains.”
I felt like I was underwater and people were talking above the surface. I could hear them, but the words meant nothing, and I couldn’t respond.
Dylan looked at me with a sad expression, then told André that Regan had decided to add escape to his long list of charges. My vision blurred, and I choked back a sob. The strangled noise had André rushing over to me, wrapping an arm around my waist.
Dylan’s gaze flickered between us, then he shook his head to clear it. “David, this is Detective Steele. He needs to ask you some questions. I know it’s hard but—”
“It’s okay.” Andre’s arms around me gave me a strength I’d never known. I looked at the detective.
He’d been quite a fit officer once, but years behind a desk had caused him to put on a little weight around the middle. The high and tight haircut likely determined a military background. His grey eyes were intense, almost scary. He was new to the case, probably since escapes were taken more seriously. He stepped forward, getting straight to the point.
“I’m sorry to put you through this again, David, but I’ve glanced at the file so that at least prevents us from going back to the beginning. Can you tell me about what happened when you left court yesterday?”
I spoke softly, as if the walls were going to tell me.
