She frowned. Did she miss something?

She hadn’t thought so.

“Sorry,” she said. “I viewed what was given to me and I reported back what I had and knew. I can’t really help you much more. I’m sorry.”

“I should leave, right?”

How many times did she have to play the peacemaker? Did she have to ride the line of no answer?

“Debra, you need to do what is good for you. I’m not in your shoes.”

“You’re right. You really are. I’m sorry I bothered you. Don’t take this the wrong way, but maybe hiring consultants wasn’t the thing to do. Everyone is just fighting so much now. Even the owners and they never have before.”

She looked up when Molly was standing in the doorway. “I’m really sorry, Debra. But I’ve got to go. I’ve got someone waiting for me.”

“That’s fine. I appreciate everything you’ve done,” Debra said. “It’s just... something isn’t adding up. I guess I’ve got some thinking to do.”

“You have a good day.” She hung up and looked at Molly. “Yes?”

“Nothing. I heard you trying to get her off the phone unsuccessfully.”

“You’re the best, Molly.”

“What’s wrong?” Molly asked. “You’re twisting your neck like it’s closing around your throat.”

That was what she loved about Molly. She always seemed to catch on without words.

“It was Debra just now. She kept saying things that didn’t make sense. Or insinuating things weren’t right at MHT.”

“Could you have missed something?” Molly asked. “Do you think it’s them that sent the rat? It said to stop looking. Maybe there is something there you missed and they wanted you to be done.”

“There would be no reason to do that. My contract ended. My obligations were fulfilled. I’ve got other jobs. Having some hours left over for follow-up isn’t a big deal.”

“What are you going to do?” Molly asked.

“I can’t go through everything again. I don’t have the time. That’s months’ worth of work.”

“How about Ryan or Jaylen?” Molly asked. “I can double-check some things also if you need. But they are learning.”

“That just crossed my mind. Ryan is going through a few things now, and rather than give him some work on a new project, I could give him an old one, have him go through exactly what I did and how, so he has an idea start to finish. Doesn’t mean he’s going to catch anything.”

“Nope,” Molly said. “But it’s a training tool for him.”

“Yeah. Thanks. I’ll go through it myself and sit with him later on where to start and how to process it. Thanks for everything.”

“Anytime,” Molly said, then turned to return to her desk.

Paris had a million other things to do, but this had to be done.

Even if it was to get that nagging feeling out of her brain.

She pulled up her files for MHT, scanned them to see if anything stood out. She looked at the files, she looked at her spreadsheet with the file names.

Then she jumped when her phone buzzed on her desk.

She’d been less jumpy in the past week.

Since things took a turn in the right direction for her and Fletcher.
