“Of course.” I could only manage a smile, one that was likely more practiced than genuine. “Just… admiring the tides of your city.”

“You’re going to make me laugh again, aren’t you?” Her mouth tilted, teasing my thoughts into a lighthearted exchange once more.

“Promise.” I leaned back, ignoring the looming clock on my device for just a moment longer. Each visit through the city revealed layers of a reality I had kept at a distance, unwilling to find permanence.

“We’ll tackle the next matches tomorrow, then.” Astoria flicked her eyes toward the window, where the sunlight began to recede. “How about I brew something for our next round? I might actually let you pick my coffee order.”

“I believe that will be an affront to every human I’ve ever known,” I joked, though beneath the surface, the depths of this interaction began to resonate in ways I could not fully articulate.

Astoria walked past me toward the kitchen, each soft step echoing through the office space in a way that reminded me of what I was beginning to fear: The extent to which this fragile connection could take root in my heart. The allure of what it meant to stay curled around the corners of my mind, all while my countdown to departure ticked closer with each passing moment.

I stood in the doorway, absorbing the scent of her herbs lingering in the air, the dappled sunlight tracing patterns over the floor. I wondered about the new horizons calling my name even as I felt the magnetic pull of this makeshift home and the woman standing at its heart.

For now, I resolved to relish my Tuesdays. My life of maps and starfields awaited in the near distance, but here in Portland, there was still time to decipher the tenderness between the vast unknowns. I took a breath, each inhale wrapping around me like her warmth, and stepped further into the comfort of what it meant to be home.

CHAPTER 9

Astoria

I stood in my kitchen, the warm glow of the lights casting a comforting sheen over the polished surfaces. The sizzle of oil in the pan brought me a familiar sense of purpose, an echo of the many nights I had cooked for myself in solitude. But recently that was different… Now I had Azyr here and while he didn’t seem to eat much, he did eat dinner with me every night. The thought sent a flutter through my stomach, one that had become all too familiar as the weeks stretched on, pulling us closer together within this intimate, swirling dance of our lives.

The fried rice simmered, its scent rich with soy sauce and the vibrant aroma of fresh herbs from my windowsill garden. I had made it countless times, a staple from my childhood, a connection to the past, but now tinged with the giddiness of the present. With every grain that crackled and popped in the pan, I imagined Azyr’s reaction, the way his light-shifting skin would flicker with appreciation and delight.

After a quick glance in the mirror, I smoothed down my shirt… nothing fancy, but a reflection of me, unfiltered and real. I stepped back into the kitchen, stirring the rice, remembering the numerous late-night discussions we had, our banter folding into one another. There was an ease that felt both refreshing and terrifying, drawing me deeper into a connection I hadn’t expected.

I was good at keeping people at arm’s length. My profession revolved around helping others navigate their departures while I stood firmly rooted to this Earth, ensuring I never had to answer for my own choices. And yet, there was something about Azyr… the way he effortlessly crossed the boundaries I had erected, illuminating the shadows I’d cast upon my own heart.

When his footsteps echoed down the stairs, he stole all of my attention. It was the kind of sound that echoed within the chamber of my chest, vibrating with an anticipation I hadn’t expected to welcome. “Just a dinner,” I whispered to myself as I wiped my hands on a dish towel, banishing the nervousness swirling inside.

Then he was in the doorway of my kitchen, mysterious light that swirled around him, hues of blue and silver playing over his skin. “Azyr,” I said, a simple name that contained the weight of everything I had already come to feel.

“Astoria.” The syllables rolled from his tongue, and I felt the warmth radiating off him like a shared secret. My pulse quickened as he caught sight of the meal I had prepared, the rich and savory aroma filling the space between us.

“It smells wonderful,” he said, his voice a low rumble that both soothed and excited me.

“Thank you. It’s a family recipe.” My words barely touched the air, but I saw his skin shift to a deeper shade of cerulean, a telling reminder of his uncanny ability to read emotional subtleties.

We settled around the table, the platters of food between us lending an informal air to the gathering. We chatted, the conversation flowing easily, each quip leading to laughter that rippled through the kitchen and filled the corners of my heart. As I watched him eat, savoring each bite, I noticed the delicate interplay of his emotions expressed through the hues of his skin, colors shifting like waves at sea.

Our discussions meandered from the oddities of human customs to the intricacies of Veyathi traditions, and the longer we talked, the more comfortable I felt pulling down the professional walls I had constructed. Each sentence exchanged turned into a tiny brick removed from my facade. I discovered I could read him fluently… not just in the shifting tones of his skin, but in the way he focused on me, truly listened, soaking in the details of my life.

“Tell me more about the intake philosophy,” he prompted after we finished eating, his eyes glinting with that dangerous mix of curiosity and warmth. “It intrigues me.”

I felt the line blurring between professionalism and personal interest, but the warmth in his gaze urged me forward. So I shared my thoughts and beliefs about letting people know the true weight of their decisions, the importance of rootedness in a world where movement was often the preferred mode of existence. I felt invigorated as I spoke, and somewhere in my heart, a long-closed door creaked open.

Then it happened… an electric moment when the air shifted and thickened between us. His gaze held mine, an unspoken question flickering in the depths of his expressive eyes. I noticed the light in his skin grow intense, something beautiful and captivating, and my breath caught in my throat as I took a step closer, instinctively drawn toward him.

Azyr hesitated, and then he closed the distance, the world fading away until all that remained was the two of us. “Astoria,” he murmured, his voice a low, inviting murmur that vibrated through me, creating a space I had never allowed myself to explore.

“Tonight… this feels different.” My voice barely held its ground, swept up in the storm of emotions that danced in the air.

As if he could read my thoughts, he leaned closer, his breath hot and heavy against my skin, his eyes locked onto mine with a predatory hunger that made my pussy clench like a vice. The atmosphere shifted tightening with every inch he closed the gap between us. His scent… some alien musk mixed with sweat and desperation, hit me like a freight train, and I was done. I reached for him, my fingers trembling, brushing against the soft, impossibly warm skin of his chest. It was like touching a live wire, electricity shooting straight up my arm and pooling between my thighs.

Our lips met in a tentative kiss… gentle at first, but that lasted about half a second before something snapped. A spark ignited, scorching through me like a wildfire, burning away every rational thought until all that was left was pure, primal fucking need. The kiss deepened, his tongue sliding against mine in a filthy, obscene dance that made me moan into his mouth. He tasted like something foreign, something other, and it only made me crave him more.

He pulled me closer, his hands tangling in my hair, tugging just hard enough to make my knees buckle. I melted against him, my body pressing flush against his, every inch of skin burning where we touched. His hips ground into mine, and I felt the hard fucking length of him straining against his pants, begging for release. My own hips rocked forward, desperate for friction, for anything to soothe the ache building inside me.

Our breaths turned into ragged gasps, mingling in the scant space between us, hot, wet, fucking intense. His hands roamed, greedy and insistent, sliding down my back to grip my ass, squeezing hard enough to make me cry out. I arched into him, my nails digging into his shoulders, leaving crescent-shaped marks in his skin. He growled… a low, guttural fucking sound that sent shivers down my spine, and lifted me onto the edge of the kitchen counter, shoving aside whatever the fuck was in the way. Plates clattered to the floor, but neither of us gave a single shit.
