“Perfect timing,” he said.

“I thought I was meeting you in the store.”

“I couldn’t wait that long,” he said. “I missed you.”

His smile lit up the dark interior of the truck, and she leaned in for a kiss. He tasted like honey and his arms around her felt like shelter.

Kendrick brushed her bangs off her forehead. “So,” he said. “Should we go shopping, or should we stay in the car and make out until it stops raining?”

“I have umbrellas,” she said.

“Of course you do.”

“And shopping bags.” She reached behind the seat for her box of supplies.

He squeezed her knee. “You saved me again. What would I do without you?”

“Live a messy life, I guess.”

“Total chaos.” Kendrick’s hand slid higher on her thigh, sending a little thrill up her body.

She reached for him, dropping the shopping bags on the floor. Groceries could wait. Total chaos was unacceptable, but there was room in her life for a little bit of chaos. In fact, a Kendrick-sized amount of chaos felt just right.
