She sat up. “Are they okay?”
“Yes.” For now. But his gut said there was more to come.
Brooke stretched her arms on a yawn.
“You should really go sleep in the guest room. You need your rest.”
“And you?” she murmured, still caught in the throes of slumber.
“I’ll head to the third bedroom Kenz made up for me.”
“Okay,” she said, getting up.
He smiled. She was so beautiful. He couldn’t wait until the day he could wake up beside her in bed. To see her first thing in the morning as his wife. After tonight, his mind was fixed. He loved her, and there was no way he was letting her go.
“What?” She smiled nervously as she ran her fingers through her hair.
“Just thinking how captivating you are.”
“Oh, I’m sure I look just lovely right now.” She chuckled.
“You do.” He moved beside her. “I’d show you how much, but you need your sleep. So . . .” He took a steadying inhale. “I’ll walk you to your room and say goodnight like a gentleman.”
“It’s only a few feet, but I won’t argue.”
They paused outside the first guest room door.
“Good night, love.”
She smiled. “I like the sound of that on your lips.”
He cupped her face. “Good, because I’m going to be calling you love a lot.”
She smiled as he lowered his mouth to hers.
He never wanted it to end, but he forced himself to step back. “Sleep well,” he managed to say, his mind flooded with the passionate kiss. He cleared his throat, hoping it’d clear his muddled brain. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
She nodded, clearly as reluctant as he was to part. But reaching for the doorknob, she entered the bedroom.
Noah exhaled and rested his forehead against the door. Man, he loved that woman. He pressed off the doorframe, heading for the back bedroom, doubting he’d sleep a wink. It’d been a roller coaster of a day, ending with the purest happiness he’d ever known with Brooke, but also including fury that someone had tried to take Caleb out. Whoever it was had no idea what was coming. When someone came after one teammate, he came after them all.
Caleb knocked on Austin’s locked front door.
It quickly opened. “Hey,” she said, stepping back to usher him in.
“How’s Lucy?” he asked.
“I’m good,” she said, rounding the corner. “Is it safe for me to leave?”
“Yes. The car is gone, but I’ll escort you out.”
“Thank you,” Lucy said. “And thanks for keeping Jaxon for a few days,” she said to Austin.
“No problem. Take as much time as you need.”
Lucy gave Austin a hug, grabbed her purse, and followed Caleb out to the driveway. She climbed inside her SUV and took off.
Caleb watched her taillights until she made a right onto Beacon. Then he scanned every inch of the neighborhood within sight. The fact that they hadn’t even interviewed anyone yet, hadn’t done anything but retrieve the barrels and set up appointments at the three foam manufacturers, gave him pause.
