“A thirteen-minute conversation is not ‘no, of course not.’ ”
“They just kept asking and I just said no and that they could go to my boss.”
“Tim, I don’t believe a word you’re saying.”
“I swear, I didn’t tell them anything!”
“You are a bad liar. What do they know?”
“Nothing, really, just, um, fishing for information. I didn’t tell them anything they didn’t know!”
“What do they know?” Peter repeated.
“Um, they said that they knew that a certain patient’s records had been deleted. And they know that a nurse put in a research request about that patient’s records on Monday.”
“Did they have a name?”
“N-Novak.” His voice cracked.
“I don’t fucking believe this,” Peter said quietly.
“The nurse was killed,” Tim said. “Did you—”
“No!”
Tim didn’t believe him. “I told you who was asking, Peter. I told you it was Liz Swanson.”
“No, you did not,” Peter said, his voice practically growling. “Did you mention my name at all?”
“N-no,” Tim lied. He had told Peter about Liz, now Peter was covering his tracks. Would he throw Tim under the bus? Blame everything on him? Maybe even murder?
Would he kill Tim?
“Go home, do not talk to anyone. Do you understand me?”
“Yeah, sure. I’m almost home now.”
Peter hung up.
No way in hell was he staying at home.
He drove straight to his condo, packed a bag, and was gone ten minutes later.
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Margo Angelhart
Gabriel had ordered several pizzas that were delivered minutes after I arrived. I thanked him profusely. I had a headache. Too much caffeine, not enough food.
Everyone was here, except Mom and Quincy, who were still in Colorado and planning to return tomorrow. For a while I thought Mom was going to move to Colorado until Dad was released, but when they talked, he convinced her to return to Phoenix.
The bell rang and Nate said, “It’s your boyfriend, Margo.”
“How do you know?”
He held up his phone. “I improved Gabe’s security.”
I saw Gabriel wince at the nickname Nate gave him and had to bite back a smile. Gabriel did need to loosen up just a bit, but I thought he’d been very gracious to let the Angelharts take over his house this week.
