He stroked the shell of her ear. Fingers trailed down her neck, across her collar bone and came to rest at the hollow of her throat. “Okay, I take it back.”
She jerked up, hissing in pain. “You can’t do that.”
″Simmer down. I can take it back. There. Now you can’t say it’s cliche.”
She shook her head. “You think you’re charming, don’t you?”
″I don’t know. Is it one of the things you love about me?”
″Maybe.”
His brow rose in question.
She slouched. “Fine. Yes, it’s one of the many things I love about you.”
″Many? Like what?”
She threw a pillow at him. “Okay, you win. I love you. I don’t want to, but you make it so damned hard not to.”
″Wow. So romantic.” He gently pulled her close. “It’s the best declaration of love I’ve ever had.”
His lips covered hers in a telling kiss that needed no words.
He pulled back and she blinked up at him. The haze cleared, and she looked at his smug face.
″Say it.” Apparently, she needed the words.
That smug face split into a huge grin before his sexy eyes turned serious. His voice dropped to a level only she could hear. “You’re the most infuriating woman I know, and I love you.”
″Almost as romantic as mine.” She smirked. They were a pair alright.
He laughed. “I love you.”
″Good, because I love you and your skunk, so you’re stuck with me now.” She slapped back the voice in her head—the one whispering the divorce rate of cops. That bitch needed to chill.
Her whole world eclipsed as he leaned in and whispered. “Glad to hear it, because I’d do anything to make it up to you.”
His lips brushed her ear. Her cheek. Her mouth.
″Mmm, anything?” She knew just the thing.
He leaned back. “I don’t know if I like the look in your eyes. But yes.”
″Don’t worry, you won’t melt.”
His eyes grew wide.
She laughed, pulled him to her, and kissed him long and hard. Her inner voice cleared her throat. He’s letting you off easy. You need to earn that trust he’s offering you. Grovel.
She pushed him back. “Self-righteous bitch.”
Confusion pinched his face. “What?”
″Not you. Move.” She shoved at his chest and swung her legs over the side of the bed.
″Hey, we had a deal. You need to stay.”
″Yes, but I also made you a promise.”
