Ryan Daniels smirked. “We’ll cut you some slack since you were redshirted.”

″Gee, thanks.”

He shrugged.

Jim, hand-in-hand with Liz, came up behind Daniels. “It’s the least we can do since you were blown up.”

″And kidnapped.” Ryan added.

Liz snacked Jim’s arm. “Amy, they’re just jealous.”

Kate hollered from the cotton candy stand next door. “Dunk that sexy man.”

Amy shrugged. She sent Trey a wicked grin and rotated her shoulder, forward then back. Her finger rubbed over the red laces on the ball. Each bump clicked in another piece of muscle memory. She let it fly.

The loud clang rang out, immediately followed by a big splash. The crowd cheered.

Trey surfaced spitting water. “Nice shot, Larson. My turn. You climb up here now.”

″Sorry, Fenley. I can’t have my latest Detective getting sick.” Chief Martin winked at her.

Amy had taken the detectives exam last month, and her first assignment was to the new task force to track down the ringleader for the corruption. Someone was the hookup but Bob wasn’t talking.

Trey climbed outside the tank, and Ian Brannon took his place. Wringing out his shorts, he grabbed a towel and crossed to her. He leaned in and brushed his lips to her cheek. He whispered. “I think we need to play some water sports later. Just the two of us.”

Warmth filled her face.

CJ cleared his throat. “Sorry to interrupt, but since you’re all here. I got word that Bob’s daughter is in remission.”

It was bittersweet. Peterson not only compromised his oath, but his ethics.

Peterson’s trial was next month. Amy doubted he knew who ran the operation.

Ryan nudged her arm. “Your dad would be proud.”

Her throat tightened. She nodded.

Trey slid an arm around her waist.

″Hey, Daniels. Isn’t that the firefighter you were making moon-eyes at across the bar that night we played them?” Amy gestured to the blonde woman at the shooting gallery. She nudged him. “Why don’t you win her a stuffed bear?”

His cow-eyed stare spoke volumes, but he declined. “I’m sure she can win her own. Besides, Mrs. W asked me to help at the bingo tent. Catch you later.”

Trey leaned in close.

″Hey, you’re wet.” She complained but didn’t pull away.

″He has it bad.”

He did. Amy worried about her friend.

″Know who else does?”

She cocked her head. “Who?”

″Me. Let’s sneak out early.” He squeezed her hip.

″Oh, it would almost be worth the wrath of Joy Whittier, but you and I need to help at the Community Officer booth.”

His groan said it all.

She’d groan too, but she knew they had the rest of their lives together. Besides, putting off the Whittier matriarch was a sure way to shorten said life.

″Come on, I’ll buy you a Pronto Pup on the way.” Amy looped an arm through his and tugged him toward the heavenly smell of batter and grease.

″You had me at Pronto Pup.”

″Not until then?”

His expressions softened. “You captured my heart from the day you almost shot my skunk.”

She smiled. Same here, same here.
