“Erica, huh? So, you two have history?” The look on his face told her it wasn’t in the past for him.

“Let’s just say we used to know each other and decided it was better if we stayed clear of one another.” He pushed off from the table and swaggered to the bar.

By the way Millie twirled her hair around her finger, she would bet he was pouring on the charm. Good for him.

She felt the air shift before she saw him. Trey slid into the chair next to hers.

“What’s the deal with you and Daniels? Are you two an item?” His voice whispered inches from her ear.

She locked down the wave of sensation at his warm breath.

With precise movements, she swiveled her head and leveled a deadpan stare at him. “He’s the father of my five children. I’m pregnant with number six.”

He rocked back in his chair and stroked his five o’clock shadow as if in thought. A smile lingered behind his hand.

“Well, you’re pretty good at hiding them. I’ll have to check the rent agreement. You might be in breach of contract with that many people in the apartment.”

“Good thing they live at his house. Otherwise, Ryan junior and his four sisters would be devastated to be homeless.” She bit her inner cheek to keep the charade going.

A warm laugh flew from his mouth.

Amy’s eyes zeroed in on his lips. Were they firm? He’d taste like beer and popcorn. Her tongue slipped out and moistened her lower lip. She was a sucker for buttered popcorn. Or maybe it was just Trey’s mouth was her weakness? Keep it together, Larson.

“You’re good. I can’t believe you got all that out with a straight face.”

She raised a brow. “What, you don’t believe me?”

Just then, Ryan slung an arm around her back. “I got a date tonight.”

“Open relationship?” Trey mocked.

Bottle to her lips, she snorted and had to grab a napkin to catch the beer before it shot out her nose. She turned to Ryan. “You have the worst timing. I almost had him believing we had five kids together.”

Daniels’ face sobered. “How do I not remember making these children? Can I get a replay?”

Her elbow jabbed his midsection. “Nice try, and no.”

She turned to Trey. “Does that answer your question?”

“For now.” His gaze locked with hers.

Flecks of gray danced in his eyes as his fingers casually peeled the label from the bottle. Too casually.

Oh, the man had more questions alright. From his expression, enough to fill an episode of Jeopardy. No way this would be the last.

Amy pulled her gaze from his and raised the beer bottle to her lips. Trey’s interest in her could be good or bad. She wasn’t sure yet.

Another round of drinks came and she relaxed when Fenley moved to the other side of the table to talk to Bob.

Not sure why, but Trey’s laid-back charm and steely probing stares faintly unnerved her.

Liz slipped into the chair Ryan had vacated to go play darts with Ian Brannon and a couple of the firefighters. “Did you order your bridesmaid dress yet?”

Amy bit back a groan. She’d been so busy with work and Tommy coming home that she’d forgotten. “It’s on my list for tomorrow.”

Liz’s lip quirked. “You forgot, didn’t you?”

“Yes, I’m sorry. I will get it ordered. I still have a couple weeks. The wedding is not until October.”
