He pulled into the driveway, put the car in park, and turned to face her. “I mean it Am, these people don’t mess around. Leave it.”

″I know what I’m doing.” She didn’t, but she wouldn’t tell him that. She opened her mouth to say she had the force backing her, but the fear on his face stopped her. His eyes pleaded with her to listen. “Okay, I won’t question the Gardiners.”

″Pinky swear?” They hadn’t done a pinky swear since high school.

She held up her hand, and he linked his little finger with hers.

″I pinky swear.”

He seemed to be satisfied with that and opened the door. ”Are you coming in?”

″I can’t this morning. Tell Mom I’ll call her later.”

They both got out and when he passed her in front of the car, he stayed her with a hand on her arm. “Be safe, Sis.”

She pulled him in for a quick hug. “Always.”

Chapter 6

As he entered the visitor’s area in Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility. Trey’s hand kept going to his empty holster. He felt naked without his weapon. The metal door behind him slammed. Startled by the thundering sound, he dropped his hand to his side.

Davis Sampson sat on the other side of the glass. A guard stood five feet behind Davis faking disinterest. His body language screamed full attention, from his rigid shoulders to the way his eyes wandered back to him and Davis.

“Mr. Sampson, I’m Agent Fenley from the BCA.” Trey set his notepad down and lowered to the chair.

“I could tell who you were from the moment you walked in.” Davis’ eyes scanned Trey’s suit and legal pad. “Not sure why you’re here though.”

Trey paused, set his pen down, and leaned forward. “You know exactly why I’m here.”

The other man slouched and crossed his arms. “I already told the other officers everything I know.”

Trey looked down at his blank notepad then back to Davis. He was a giant of a man, even slumped back in the chair. But not being a guard now on the inside couldn’t be easy for him. Even though he was in the neighboring prison to the one he worked in, he would spend his time in solitary confinement for his own safety.

“That’s right. You stated that Richard Finden was the one with the contacts and you didn’t have anything to do with his death.”

“I didn’t.” His eye twitched.

“So, you’re telling me that Finden hired a cop to do his dirty work, and that cop killed him before he was paid? Finden’s financials were clean, but you just happened to pull a large sum of money from your investment account the day before his death.”

Beads of sweat popped out on Sampson’s forehead.

“Come on. Who’d you give the money to? And don’t think I believe your story about hiring a contractor to redo your basement.”

“Like I told the other officers. I had nothing to do with Finden’s death. I didn’t even know he was murdered. I thought he had a heart attack.”

“Come on, you confessed to Dr. Garcia you had someone take care of Warden Finden. We both know what you meant.”

Sampson peered over his shoulder at the guard. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Trey scribbled something on his notepad and flipped it over. “You know how this works. You help us and life on the inside can get a little better. You don’t, and the guards might start gossiping about how you were a guard. They know you’re dirty. But if the other inmates find out… they will want blood.”

Davis slammed his fists onto the table.

The guard stepped closer. Trey motioned him off with a wave of his hand.

“You know how that would go over in here. You used to be one of them. They wouldn’t protect you for long. If they do at all.”

The man’s face turned stone cold.
