"It’s standard procedure for BCA to be called in when there is a death in police custody." He slipped his hands in his pockets.
She shifted as well. Her arms uncrossed and her hands again slipped to her hips, inches from her firearm.
He swallowed. She wouldn't shoot a fellow officer of the law… Would she? If she was the dirty cop, maybe. His core tightened, and his eyes scanned the gym through the two-way mirror. Too many witnesses. He was safe for the moment.
"Yes, they do, but what's with all the cloak and dagger stuff? Since when does the BCA do undercover work?"
"I'm not undercover... exactly." Oh look, her flush was turning a beautiful deep rose, but the way her hands clenched and unclenched, he didn't think he could stay quiet much longer.
"It's about the dirty cop, isn't it?"
His gaze shot back to hers. He leaned closer. "You want to tell me--"
The door flung open. "Trey. Oh, sorry, I didn't see you had company."
Irritation flashed on Amy's face before her gaze surveyed the other woman. Larson stood a little taller, that weird competitive thing women did. She sized Brie up.
Trey bit his cheek trying to hide his smile. "Brie, why don't you go wait for me upstairs."
She nodded and backed out of the room, closing the door behind her.
He watched her go. Her auburn waves bounced in a high ponytail like they always did. He turned back to Amy. A calculated look stared back at him. Her hands flexed inches from her gun and she all but glared at him.
"What?"
"Nothing." She shook her head. Her expression smoothed.
Like he would believe she was suddenly calm. Not a chance. Officer Larson was pissed, and she was trying to get the upper hand.
"She's a pretty woman." Her focus locked on him. It was a damn good cop-stare. Too bad for her he had his own cop-stare.
"Yeah, I guess." He watched her.
This quickly turned into a staring contest.
Don’t blink. Don’t flinch.
Yes. Amy blinked and her brow climbed up her forehead as if to say, this is stupid. But inwardly, Trey cheered. He’d won a point in this battle they were having, even if he was the only one keeping score.
The look on her face said she knew he’d won that round, but the game wasn’t over.
She shook it off and checked her fingernails. "A little young for you, but that's none of my business."
Vomit caught in his throat at the thought of dating Brie, but he couldn’t let Amy see that. It would give her an advantage in this weird game they were playing. He forced a smirk to his lips. "I don't know. She's in grad school."
"Well, I won't keep you. Wouldn't want to keep Brie waiting upstairs too long."
"She’ll wait. We need to talk. You mentioned a dirty cop."
"Never mind. I wouldn't want Miss College Barbie to worry." She reached for the door.
"Amy." Enough of the game. He couldn’t let her go without finishing this.
She stopped, her hand on the doorknob. Lines of exhaustion slipped through the tough-girl mask.
"Fine, promise me you won't say anything to anyone, and I will stop by later... We do need to talk about this."
Her internal debate played out on her face before she nodded and left the office.
