“Water?” She held up her bottle.

“I’m good.”

He circled, taking in her apartment.

She glanced around. Basic beige walls surrounded the space, but she smiled at the quirky collection of furniture. Her grandma’s old claw foot table, Grandpa Larson’s deer leg lamp, and her beloved sofa. The leather was as soft as butter and hugged her like a lover.

Her gaze returned to the man in the middle of her living room. His presence shrunk the space. His eyes looked gun metal gray today.

She cleared her throat. “Have a seat.”

He dropped to the couch and leaned forward. His hands fisted as they clasped together, arms on knees. His face was neutral, but she caught the small twitch of his jaw. Nerves?

Her own tension eased a little. She slipped down to perch on the other end of the couch.

Act natural. Ha, like that would happen. She was a cop, but this man made her knees quake and other parts of her body standup and take notice. Natural would be to cuff him or… climb him like a tree, and that’s not on the agenda. Ever.

She inhaled a deep breath as stealthily as possible and blanked her expression. “You wanted to talk. Why not start with telling me if I’m a suspect?”

His fingers twitched, but other than that, he showed no signs of nerves. “I have been assigned the Finden case.”

“Not my question. Besides, I thought they ruled it a heart attack?” Not that she believed it, but…

His gaze cut to the side for the briefest of moments before he cocked his head and leveled his steely eyes on her. “Well, that was the official line. You mentioned a dirty cop. What do you know about that?”

He evaded her question, so she was a suspect. Air rushed out of her lungs. Before she could answer, he spoke.

“Everyone who was in the station the night Finden died will need to be looked into.”

She nodded. Of course, no one gets a free pass. “I am a suspect.”

He looked her straight in the eyes. “Do you have an alibi?”

Trick question. He had all the case notes and undoubtedly went over them with a microscope. If her story changed now, she’d look guilty.

Amy met his stare with a serious look of her own.

“You know I don’t. I had just gotten back from my patrol and was doing paperwork.”

“A lot longer than you usually take to write up your reports.”

He’d done his homework. No surprise there.

“Agent Fenley, is this a formal interview?”

Silent, he watched her for a moment. Surveying her every reaction, no doubt. She fought to remain still under his scrutiny.

“No. I’m not looking at you for this, but I also can’t rule you out, yet.”

“Why?”

He gave her a duh look. “You had opportunity and have been looking into old cases.”

Shock slammed her back. “How do you know that?”

“Your search history.”

Made sense, she relaxed her shoulders. “Oh okay, but that wasn’t my question. Why don’t you like me for this?”
