Two knocks and the door swung open. Trey leaned against the casing like he had been expecting her.
“Hey.”
“Hey back.” She handed him a beer.
“Do you want to come in?” He stepped back. Stinky waddled around the corner.
She smiled. “Thanks, but I’m going to go enjoy my nice clean apartment.”
He picked at the label on the bottle. “I wanted to replace your couch, too.”
“No, you did so much already. That bed. I gave it the bounce test.”
His lip hitched up at that. “It passed?”
“Oh yeah.” She tried to hide the smile pulling at the corners of her mouth but couldn’t. “Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you.”
She twisted off the cap of her bottle.
He did the same and clinked it with hers.
The muscle in her cheek twitched. “To never letting the crap get you down.”
“Eloquent.” He raised the bottle to his lips.
“I could have said shit. But I’m trying to be ladylike.”
He snorted.
She waited for the beer to shoot out his nose. No such luck.
“I think you should come in for a while.”
“Nope, stopped by to say thank you and to let you know we have a dinner date tomorrow at the Petersons’.”
“So soon. That’s good.”
“Not the words I’d use.” Her shoulders shrugged. “We need to leave around five-forty-five.”
She stepped back and did her best ballerina turn.
“Amy.”
She glanced over her shoulder as she opened the door.
“About those panties.” He winked.
He didn’t have to say which ones. She knew exactly the pair he was talking about, and it wasn’t her granny panties.
Mischief flicked in his eyes. “Nice color.”
“They were a gift.” She did an internal head slap. Why did she tell him that?
“I’ll remember that at Christmas.”
Flirting, that’s all this was. Harmless flirting. She knew him well enough now to know he was trying to lighten her mood.
Crap, the sloshing in her gut wasn’t the beer. Something deep inside wanted to strut right up to him in nothing but those undies. Just to see the look on his face.
