Amy ignored her own throbbing hip and helped him limp to the weight bench.

He appeared to be okay but she’d still like a doctor to check him over.

Her head ping-ponged back and forth assessing her brother for injuries before asking Trey. “Do we need a bus?”

Tommy piped up. “No paramedics. I’ll be fine. Crazy drivers. I can’t believe he jumped the curb. He must have been drunk.”

Or aiming for him. She didn’t say it, but the gnawing in her chest couldn’t be ignored. Paulie made a big mistake going after her brother.

Brannon and the officer from the other night showed up to take their statements.

She got Tommy situated with the rookie then she gave her statement to Brannon. When finished, she pulled Trey aside. “The car was the same make and model as the one that killed Gus West.”

“Are you sure?”

She nodded. “I got a brief look at the driver. Dark hoodie pulled up and gloves are all I could see through the window.”

Trey looked over her head toward the office. “Who did he piss off lately?”

“Not him, me.”

“Gardiners?”

“Yup. I started digging into the case and talked to Gus then all this shit started happening. And it can’t be a coincidence that Paulie gave me a warning yesterday, and today, my brother is playing chicken with the same car that killed Gus.”

“You don’t know if it’s the same car. There are hundreds of those make and models around.” He crossed his arms over his chest.

Her eyes dropped to the wide expanse then bounced back to his face. No smirk this time, only cop.

She pulled out her phone and hit redial. The same guy answered. “Ashwood Towing and Impound.”

“Hey, Officer Larson again, remember me?”

“Sure, it was only a half an hour ago.”

“Can you run out in the lot and make sure that Honda we talked about is still there?”

“I’m sure--”

“Check. I’ll wait.”

She could hear the background noises of the lobby, two minutes later he was back. His breath huffed in and out. “It’s gone. How did you know?”

“Thanks. I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.” She disconnected and turned to Trey. “Up for a drive?”

He pushed off the wall. “Let me get my badge and gun.”

Amy took a minute to slip on her jeans. Her holster didn’t work with her sweats.

On the car ride, Trey asked. “Why would the unsub use the same car when it’s been all over the news?”

Amy had been thinking about that. “I don’t know. Maybe it was convenient. He could have had the keys already.”

“It could be a she.”

“Could be.”

They arrived at the lot and found that the manager had the video all queued up and ready for them to watch. The unsub walked up at 5:24 a.m.
