“I knew Amy would have cool friends.” Mira clinked her drink with the others.

Amy’s drink was halfway to her lips when she spotted the purple hair and fiery expression coming through the door with a group of women.

Pauline spotted her and froze mid-sentence.

“Shit, I may need backup,” she mumbled.

Candi suddenly became alert. Her hand rested near her hip. No doubt inches from her backup piece.

Paulie zeroed in on Amy and torpedoed across the crowded restaurant. She slammed her hands on the table and got nose to nose with Amy. “Are you trying to ruin my business?”

Candi pushed back from the table. Her holstered weapon clearly visible now.

Amy put up her hand to halt her. “Paulie, you might want to back the fuck up. Or Officer Maguire might interpret your communication style as hostile. Which it is.”

Paulie’s violet gaze jumped from Amy’s to Candi. She slowly retreated a few feet. “You arrested my delivery guy. What the hell?”

Shit, she knows. “Do you want to discuss this somewhere more private?”

“Screw that. I should file a harassment case. I bet you planted those drugs on him.”

“You could but you would lose. We have him on video from the moment I opened the door. The drugs were in the takeout container under the meal.” Amy cataloged her reactions. If she hadn’t known Paulie her whole life, she might have missed the slight forehead wrinkle or the way her thumb twitched. She didn’t know.

“Bullshit. This isn’t over.” She whirled around and stalked out.

“Wow, dinner and a show.” Lorna punched Kate’s arm. “Ouch.”

Amy needed to have a serious talk with Pauline Gardiner one of these days. She wondered if it would be across an interrogation table.

The next morning Amy slinked into the station wearing dark sunglasses. After several drinks and no book talk, Candi and Amy got a ride home from CJ, who came to pick up Lorna. Candi was still asleep on her bed when she left for work.

For a second day this week, Trey was at her desk, only this time he was in a suit and his badge was clipped to his belt.

He turned his attention to her. A grin lit his face. “Missed you last night.”

“Yeah, the night blurred after the third shot. Or was it the fourth?” She dropped her bag on her desk and sank to the other chair.

“I heard it was quite a party.” His head tipped towards CJ’s desk.

Amy dropped her head to her hands. “I will never do tequila again. Unless it's in a margarita.”

She nodded toward his badge. “So, the cat’s out of the bag?”

“It was time to do interviews anyway.” He adjusted his tie.

She liked this shaved and polished up version of Trey. Almost as much as the scruffy, sweaty Trey. By the open casefile, he was here to work, not merely for her to drool over.

“Are you starting with me?” She gestured to her desk he was sitting at.

“Nope, I just wanted to see my girl.” He snatched her hand and tugged her to him.

“Whoa,” her voice barely a whisper. “Your secrets out, so wouldn’t that mean the fake relationship is over?”

He lifted a brow. “Did it feel fake the other night?”

Amy had to acknowledge he had a point. “I wasn’t faking anything.”

“Good. So come here.” He tugged her the last couple of inches and gave her a light kiss before he stood and straightened his suit coat. “I have an interview with Gunter Lindstrom this afternoon, assuming his lawyer doesn’t reschedule again. But would you be up for dinner tonight?”
