“Okay. Don’t keep things from me. This is your one pass.”

He answered with a single nod. No way would he do anything to lose this woman. “Thank you.”

“For?”

“Believing me. For not looking at me like I’m a monster.” Other than his family and Nash, most people had a negative reaction when they found out he'd been in prison.

He really liked this woman. Her openness and genuine caring. She wanted honesty. Well, she’d get it. “Laney. I may not have deserved to go to jail for the bar incident. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t done some bad things.”

She thought about it for a minute, then asked, “Did you call your mom regularly?”

“Weekly.” Where was she going with this?

“Did you cheat on any of your girlfriends?”

“No.” He shook his head. “But don’t make me out to be a hero.”

“You served your country. That alone makes you a hero. But I won’t. I’m not drawing your name in hearts, if that’s what you are worried about.” She pursed her lips. He could see the internal debate play out on her face. “But if I’m going to let you into my bed, I’d like to know you’re not an axe murderer.”

Cade smiled. Thanks to years of special ops training, he moved in on her like a panther circling its target. “No axes. And aren’t you a little late to qualify me now? I’ve been between those long, sexy legs.”

“That doesn’t count. It was an extremely stressful situation.” She stepped back. It was cute watching her act all tough when he already knew the sounds she made when she came.

“So the orgasm you had didn’t count?”

Her back hit a tree and Cade caged her in. He stroked one finger down the curve of her cheek, the line of her neck, to the collar where all that beautiful skin was hidden from view.

“I, uh, no.” The breathy words puffed from her lips on clouds of white fluffy condensation.

Cade rested his forehead on hers. He could see each strand of blue in her eyes, the soft brown ringing the iris, and the way her pupils dilated when he brushed a soft kiss on her nose. Fuck, she had his body stirring for more. More of her smell—Apricots. More of her silky skin under his fingers, his lips, his tongue.

“Cade?”

“Yes?”

“How long before your friend gets here?”

Not having a watch, Cade could only guess. Was she cold? The sun was high in the sky and the wind had died down, but there was still a chill in the air. He ran his hands up and down her arms. Maybe they should have stayed at the house where they used the phone? Cade wanted to get to the meeting spot early. Plus, the last thing he needed was the homeowner getting suspicious. “Twenty minutes?”

Laney slipped her hands down his chest to the waistband of his jeans as she nibbled her way across his jaw.

“So, I passed the interview?” He smirked.

“Not yet.”

A loud zip cut through the quiet a second before the cool air touched his junk. How the hell had she done that so fast… and with her gloves on?

“You’re good at that.” He motioned to his now open fly. She pulled off a glove and slipped her fingers inside his pants. Whoa! “Cold.”

“Sorry. I haven’t actually unzipped anyone before with gloves on, but I have to zip up the kids' coats all the time.”

Her talking about kids should have killed his erection. Hell, it was already confused which way to go between her talented fingers and the cold. Laney’s hand warmed fast and Cade’s little head was liking the new outdoor activity they were engaged in.

The sound of a vehicle coming echoed in his ears, but his attention was fully on Laney and her magic hands.

“Oh, fuck yeah.” He dropped his forehead to hers. “Baby, if you keep this up, I’m not going to be able to walk.”

She grinned and adjusted her grip. Shit. He didn’t think it could get any better… He. Was. Wrong.

The sound of the vehicle grew louder. He should stop her. The only reason he heard the coming traffic was because of his training. Because every other one of his senses was focused on Laney and her talented fingers. Fuck, he had to stop her soon, or he’d have a mess on his hands… or hers.

Cade groaned. A few more seconds.

A horn beeped. “You guys need a lift?”

At Nash’s voice, Laney pulled her hand back faster than Cade could register the sound. He tugged himself in and fastened his pants. One look at Laney, and he knew things were about to change. Or maybe they already had.
