He needed out of here. Now. Cade picked up the pen and scrawled his signature on the line. “Am I free to go?”

“Yes.”

Cade shoved the chair back and bolted for the door. He looked into the room where Laney had been. Empty. With his head on a swivel, he scanned the police station rooms as he made his way to the exit. Where was she?

Outside, he looked for Nash’s truck.

“I told your friend, Nash, I’d give you a ride. Unless that’s not who you were looking for.” Fenley bit back a grin.

Cade remained silent. He didn’t need to give his friend more ammunition to razz him about. He inhaled the crisp air. Freedom. This night could have turned out very differently.

“Looks like my work here is done.” Fenley pulled out his keys.

“Thanks, man. I can’t believe you drove all the way down here for me.”

“What are friends for? Where to?” He clicked his remote, and the car at the curb flashed its lights.

Cade glanced down the street. The only movement was snowflakes drifting through the streetlights. He could shoot a cannon down Main Street this time of night. Not even the barflies were out tonight. “Would you be mad if I said home? I’m beat.”

“Naw. But you have to come up to Ashwood and meet Amy one of these days.”

“That’s right. You got married last year. Sorry I couldn’t make the wedding. I definitely have to meet the woman who can put up with you.”

Cade climbed into the car. Before he put on his seat belt, he held out his hand to Trey. “Thank you. Really. I know we send texts and the occasional call, but I miss your ugly face.”

Fenley’s perfect, white teeth flashed in the dark. “I missed you too.”

“Now that I’m only a couple of hours away, we’ll see each other more often.”

“What, you plan on getting arrested again soon?” Fenley smirked as he put the car in drive.

Cade flipped him the finger. “God, I hope not.”
