The cheering, clapping, and laughing echoed off the lake, reminding Wes why he loved camp every year. Aside from the poison-berry incident, the week had been a success.

When he and Cassandra went to the cabin to rest and freshen up before dinner, she sat on the bed. “That was a great day. I think the water balloon baseball was my favorite.”

“Until they decided to pelt the umpires with water balloons.”

She laughed. “That was my favorite part.”

“I have to admit, it did feel pretty good in the middle of the afternoon.”

“You were soaked.”

He patted his T-shirt. “Dry now.” He sat next to her, then lay back on the bed. “Tomorrow we head back to reality.”

Cassandra lay next to him and took his hand. “Are you worried that what we found here won’t follow us home?”

He looked at her. “No. Are you?”

She smiled. “I’m worried that I’m not going to be able to spend as much time with you as I’d like.”

“We have every day at work.”

“But we’ll be working.”

“Still. We can eat lunch in the office. Grab dinner a few nights a week on the way home.”

“I have Bailey to get home to.”

“Of course. We’ll figure it out.” Wes turned his head back to stare up at the ceiling. “What is Nick going to think about this?”

“I don’t really care. I’m not going to rush into telling him. He’ll find out soon enough.”

Wes sat up, then stood and went to the window. Cassandra came up behind him and put her arms around his waist. He patted her hand. “Not sure I want to spend any time with him.”

“You don’t need to.”

“He’s Bailey’s dad. It’s bound to happen sooner or later.”

“I understand why you hated me all these years, but Nick…he was as innocent as you.”

“Hmm.”

Cassandra put a hand on his arm and turned him to face her. “What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

“Weston?”

He kissed her on the forehead. “I’m going to take a quick shower before dinner.” He moved away from her.

“Wes! What aren’t you telling me?”

“Um…nothing that you don’t already know.”

She cocked her head. “Pretend that I don’t.”

He returned to the bed and sat on the edge. “That night he came to talk to me. Brought me your…message. He was passive-aggressive and demeaning.”

Cassandra held up a hand. “What do you mean, the night he came to talk to you? As far as I know, you’ve never spoken to Nick.”
